- With the women's
heptathlon and men's decathlon multi-events in the books, Utah State's men and women
are in the lead after day two of the four-day WAC Outdoor Track & Field
Championships. For the women, Utah State leads with 10 points, followed by Nevada
with nine points and Louisiana Tech with eight points. Boise State is in fourth
place with six points, Fresno State is fifth with three points, New Mexico
State is sixth with two points, and host Hawai'i is in seventh place with one
point. On the men's side, Utah State is in the lead with 13 points, Idaho is in
second with 10 points and Fresno State is third with eight points.
The day began with the conclusion of the women's heptathlon and the men's
decathlon. After completing four of the seven heptathlon events on Tuesday, Utah
State freshman Chari Hawkins was in third place with 3,123 points. After
dropping to fourth following the long jump, Hawkins grabbed the lead with a throw
of 125-00 (38.09m) in the javelin. She
then ran a 2:27.90 in the 800 meters to take the title with 5,124 points. Louisiana Tech junior Jesseka Jones finished second
for the second straight year with a total of 5,088 points. Boise State freshman
Alexi Morton finished third with 4,961 points, moving up one postition from
yesterday.
For the men, Idaho junior Andrew Blaser, Tuesday's leader after the first five
events of the decathlon, held on to his lead to win the event with 7,037
points. Utah State's Philip Noble
maintained his day one position to finish second for the second straight year with
6,960 points. Fresno State's David Deal finished third, also for the second
straight year, with 6,839 points.
Tomorrow's field events begin at 2:00 p.m. (HT) with the women's hammer throw
while track events start at 4:00 p.m. (HT) with the women's 3,000-meter
steeplechase.
