FRESNO STATE TO REPRESENT WAC IN NCAA TOURNAMENT
Fresno State will represent the WAC in the 2011 NCAA Men’s Tennis Team Championships. The No. 38 Bulldogs (16-8) will head to the campus of California in Berkeley, Calif., where they will face No. 19 Minnesota (19-5) in the first round at 11 a.m. (PT) Friday, May 13. The two teams met earlier in the season on Jan. 29 at the ITA Kick-Off weekend on a neutral-site match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center with the Gophers winning 4-2.

In the other half of the bracket, No. 15 California (12-7) hosts Marist (18-3). The winners of the two first-round matches will play in the second round at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14.

The winner of each first- and second-round site advances to the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships May 19-24 at the Taube Tennis Center in Palo Alto, Calif., hosted by Stanford.

THREE WAC PLAYERS SELECTED TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
One WAC singles player and one WAC doubles team were among the 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams selected to compete in the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships, and the WAC had tournaments.

In singles, New Mexico State’s Arthur Surreaux was the WAC’s automatic qualifier. In doubles, Fresno State’s Rikus de Villiers and Remi Boutillier, who are currently ranked No. 15, received the WAC’s automatic qualifier.

Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championships was awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125, the NCAA subcommittee applied the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete was the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a record of a minimum of 13 completed singles matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
