DENVER - The Western Athletic Conference today announced the winner of its annual Commissioner's Cup with this year's honor going to Boise State with 95.5 points. The Broncos ended the year with five WAC championships including a regular season title in football (three-way tie with Nevada and Hawaii) and postseason titles in men's cross country, women's swimming and diving, men's indoor track and field, and gymnastics. Fresno State was second with 89.50 points, and New Mexico State finished in third with 82.50 points.
The WAC awards its Commissioner's Cup to the school that performs the best in each of the conference's 19 men's and women's championships. Points are awarded in order of finish, equal to the number of teams that participate in each sport, and are averaged between a team's regular-season finish (if applicable) and its WAC championship finish. Teams that do not qualify for a postseason tournament due to a smaller field receive points equal to their regular-season finish. Ties are not broken but instead are averaged between the tied teams. Affiliate members are not eligible for the Commissioner's Cup, but their standings are still used for determining overall points.
This marks Boise State's third Commissioner's Cup. The Broncos also won last season and in the 2005-06 season.
Coming in second place, Fresno State finished with 89.50 points. The Bulldogs won five WAC championships including postseason titles in women's soccer, women's basketball, and women's tennis and both postseason and regular season titles in men's tennis and baseball.
New Mexico State rounded out the top three with 80.75 points. The Aggies finished with a postseason title in men's golf and both the postseason and regular season titles in softball.
Utah State finished in fourth place with 79.75 points with a regular season title in women's soccer and postseason titles in volleyball, men's indoor track and field and men's outdoor track and field. The Aggies also won both the regular season and postseason titles in men's basketball. Nevada finished in fifth with 64.00 points and Louisiana Tech followed in sixth with 61.75 points.
