TUCSON, Ariz. -- Four WAC baseball players have been named to the Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American baseball team announced today by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
The team, chosen by performances up to regional playoffs and picked by the staff of Collegiate Baseball newspaper, features Fresno State's Greg Gonzalez and Dusty Robinson, along with Hawai‘i's Kolten Wong and Lenny Linsky. Gonzalez was named to the first team, while Robinson, Wong and Linsky received third team honors.
Gonzalez, a pitcher from San Bruno, Calif., also was named the WAC Pitcher of the Year and a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award. The right-hander is 11-0 this season and has the second longest winning streak in college baseball of 13-straight decisions dating back to 2010. The all-conference selection has seventh best ERA in the nation of 1.43. Gonzalez has allowed 16 earned runs in 100.2 innings of work. He has given up 64 hits and 26 walks. Gonzalez has struck out 121 batters, which is seventh best in the nation.
Robinson, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., was named a Freshman All-American in 2009 and was selected the WAC Player of the Year this season. He also earned first-team All-WAC honors and was named the WAC Tournament MVP. The outfielder is hitting .318 and has started 51 games without committing an error. Robinson leads the conference with 20 doubles and 16 home runs. He became the first Bulldog to hit 15 or more home runs three seasons in a row. Robinson is 11th in the nation in home runs hit.
Wong is projected to be an early round selection in Monday's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, and was already named first-team all-WAC for the third time. He started 59 games this season, recording 48 runs scored, 11 doubles, three triples, 53 RBI, and led the Rainbows with seven homeruns. He also led the conference with 23 stolen bases and ranks third in on-base percentage (.492) and fourth in slugging percentage (.560).
Linsky also recently earned an all-WAC selection after leading the conference with 14 saves, which is also a new single-season Rainbow record. For the season, he recorded 34 strikeouts in 34.2 innings for a 1.30 earned run average. He picked up a pair of saves at the 2011 WAC tournament. Linsky is a potential high MLB draft pick as well.
