WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
Fresno State Bulldogs
The Fresno State men and women’s cross country teams finished within the top five at the Hornet Jamboree on Saturday at Granite Regional Park this past week ... the Bulldogs’ Paul Zwama earned seventh individually in the men’s 4M competition with a time of 19:39 while Lyndsie Etherton was 13th in the women’s 5K race (18:10) ... n the men’s race, Minnesota finished first with 15 points and Fresno State came in second with 91 points defeating seven other schools ... the women’s team finished fourth with 91 points beating Cal State Stanislaus (150), Santa Clara (161), Saint Mary’s (194), William Jessup (266), and Dominican (267).
Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine
Hawai’i finished in third place at UH’s 10th Annual Big Wave Invitational at the Kane’ohe Klipper golf course Saturday ... Hawai’i’s top finisher was sophomore Kevyn Murphy, who took eighth place with a time of 19:31:38 ... five other ‘Bows finished in the top 20—Ashlee Jimenez and Celeste Almarez took 12th and 13th place respectively with times of 19:55:02 and 19:55:72, while Alison Williams (20:12:59), Louise Mulvey (20:38:25), and Ariana Horton (20:43:28) finished 18th, 19th, and 20th .... the Rainbow Wahine tallied 64 points for third place, right behind Brigham Young-Hawai’i’s 55 points that secured second. Alaska-Anchorage swept the top three individual places and ran away with the title with 19 points. Hawai’i Pacific finished in fourth with 117 points followed by UH-Hilo (147) and Chaminade (161).
Idaho Vandals
Idaho did not compete this past week ... the team returns to the course on Saturday when it travels to Seattle to compete in the Sundodger Invitational.

Nevada Wolf Pack
Nevada placed second at its final home meet of the season Saturday night at the Nevada Twilight hosted at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks, Nev. ... Nevada competed against Utah and UNLV in the collegiate open race which was one of 11 races conducted as a part of the Twilight event ... the other races were all high school- or junior high school-level races ... Utah won the collegiate race with 20 points over Nevada’s 41 and UNLV took third with 65 ... the meet was Nevada’s second of the year, but it was the first for a number of the Wolf Pack’s top-lineup harriers ... sophomore Johanna Olsson was the Pack’s top finisher placing fifth with a time of 15:15 ... Olsson transferred to Nevada from a college in Taby, Sweden and was running in her first race with the Wolf Pack.
New Mexico State Aggies
New Mexico State made another strong outing in its second meet of the season, finishing 2nd at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational in Santa Teresa, N.M., Saturday, Sept. 10 ... the men’s and women’s team each finished in 2nd behind UTEP ... the men’s team finished with 35 points and the women’s team finished with 49 points ... for a second-straight meet Junior Jonah Ruybalid earned the best time for an Aggie with 21:43.4 in the 6664m run, good for 5th overall ... on the women’s side, freshman Tamara Lementino finished with the best time for an Aggie with 20:07.8 in the 5080m run, good for 6th overall. Freshman Caroline Lewiecki finished 9th overall with a time of 20:13.5.
San Jose State Spartans
San Jose State did not compete this past week ... the Spartans return to the course on Sept. 17 when the team travels to participate in the Riverside Invitational ... the race is set to begin at 9 a.m. PT.
Utah State Aggies
Utah State did not compete last week ... the team returns to competition on Sept. 17 at the Montana State Open in Bozeman, Mont ... the event will begin at 9 a.m. MT.
WAC NOTES
NEW MEXICO STATE’S RUYBALID AND NEVADA’S OLSSON NAMED CROSS COUNTRY ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
New Mexico State’s Johan Ruybalid and Nevada’s Johanna Olsson have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s Cross Country Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Sept. 5-11.
Ruybalid, a junior from Los Lunas, N.M. (Los Lunas HS), placed fifth overall at the Lobo Invitational last week. It marks the second-straight week that Ruybalid has finished with the best overall time for New Mexico State in an event. Ruybalid placed fifth at the event with a time of 21:43.4.
Olsson, a sophomore from Taby, Sweden (Rudbeckskolan HS), led the Wolf Pack in her first-ever collegiate race placing fifth with a 4K time of 15:15 at the Nevada Twilight race last week. Olsson placed fifth in her first run as a member of the Nevada team, taking on runners from Utah and UNLV.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2011 WAC Cross Country Championship travels to Honolulu, Hawaii. This year’s championships will be hosted by the University of Hawaii and will take place at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Utah State men and New Mexico State women claimed the championships last year.

NCAA REGIONALS
The 2011 Cross Country Regionals will be held at nine sites throughout the country, Saturday, Nov. 12. WAC teams will be represented in three locations. The West Region will be held in Palo Alto, Calif. (Stanford). The Mountain Region will be held in Provo, Utah (Brigham Young), while Louisiana Tech will be the lone team in the South Central Regional (Baylor) in Waco, Texas.
