DENVER - Idaho's Jarred Bossio and Kayla Mortellaro have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Month for September.
Bossio, a senior from Olympia, Wash. (Capital HS), won and finished in a tie for second in the two events he competed in during September. He opened the month by winning the Palouse Collegiate in Pullman, Wash., with an 8-under par 205 (65-68-72). He then finished in a tie for second place at the Dash Thomas Memorial in Eagle, Idaho with a 10-under par 203 (70-67-66). As a team, Idaho also finished second at the tournament. Bossio ended the month with a WAC-best 68.0-stroke average and carded five of his six rounds under par.
Mortellaro, a senior from Phoenix, Ariz. (Mesa Distance Learning), played in two tournaments during the month and averaged 72.67 strokes over six rounds. At the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., Mortellaro took third place with a one-under par 215 (73-72-70). She then finished in a tie for second at the WSU Cougar Cup with a 5-over par 221 (80-72-69), one stroke behind the winner. Her efforts helped the Vandals to a third-place team finish.
Other men nominated: Rufie Fessler, Fresno State; Travis Wilmore, Louisiana Tech; Kevin Lucas, Nevada; Justin Shin, New Mexico State; and Jay Myers, San Jose State.
