ATHLETES OF THE WEEK (Jan. 9-15)
Fresno State’s Marianne Jodoin has been named Verizon Western Athletic Women’s Conference Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 8-15.
Jodoin, a sophomore from Varennes, Canada (Ecole Georges High School), opened the spring season with a pair of singles victories and one doubles win at the California Winter Invitational, where the Bulldogs played in a round-robin tournament against three ranked teams – No. 8 Cal, No. 41 St. Mary’s and No. 44 Cal Poly.
Jodoin, ranked No. 49 in the nation, opened the weekend with a three-set victory over 82nd-ranked Catherine Isip of St. Mary’s. After dropping a straight-set singles match against Jana Juricova of Cal, the fifth-ranked singles player in the country, on Saturday, Jodoin came back to defeat Cal Poly’s Alexa Lee, 6-3, 6-3, on Sunday.
HAWAI’I GETS OFF TO STRONG START IN 2012
The University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team concludes its two-week homestand on Friday, when it faces Mississippi at 1:30 p.m.at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine are coming off of a strong performance in the Spring Invitational, winning 9-out-of-10 doubles matches and 13-out-of-20 singles matches against Kansas, Kentucky, and Washington State. UH split two earlier duals, defeating Penn State, 4-3, and falling to No. 6 Baylor, 2-5.
This week, the Rainbow Wahine host No. 37 Mississippi on Friday, the first dual of the season for Hawai’i.
FRESNO STATE FACES THREE RANKED FOES AT CAL INVITE
No. 66 Fresno State opened the 2012 spring season at the California Winter Invitational. The Bulldogs played a round-robin tournament with No. 8 Cal, No. 41 St. Mary’s and No. 44 Cal Poly.
Fresno was led by sophomore Marianne Jodoin, who collected two singles victories and one doubles win. Her only singles loss came to Jana Juricova of Cal, the fifth-ranked singles player in the country.
The Bulldogs are now off until Jan. 27 when they travel to Athens, Ga. for their first dual matches of the season
IDAHO OPENS PLAY WITH DOMINANT VICTORY
The Idaho women’s tennis team started its 2012 spring season the exact same way it started in 2011, with a 7-0 victory over Lewis-Clark State College in the season opener Monday. The Vandals travel to Pullman, Wash., to face Washington State on Thursday.
FOUR WAC SCHOOLS BEGIN SEASON THIS WEEKEND
Nevada, New Mexico State, San Jose State and Utah State will all see the first action of 2012 this weekend:
-Nevada travels to Long Beach, Calif., for matches three matches. The Wolf Pack face Cal State Northridge on Friday, Loyola Marymount on Saturday and Long Beach State on Sunday.
-New Mexico State is off to Las Vegas, Nev., for three matches. The Aggies battle host UNLV on Friday, Weber State on Saturday and Pacific on Sunday.
-San Jose State will participate in the Training Camp Invitational, that began on Wednesday, before traveling to Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday.
-Utah State heads to Boise, Idaho, for two matches against Boise State on Friday, and Denver on Saturday.
