Verizon WAC Women’s Athletes of the Week
Utah State’s Kylie Hirschi and Spela Hus were named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of Jan. 16-22.
Hirschi, a sophomore from Sandy, Utah (Brighton HS), won the 800-meter run breaking the tape with a time of 2:12.93, at the Cherry and Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. on Jan. 21. The time was changed to 2:12.19 with an altitude adjustment, making it the best time in the WAC this season by more than three seconds.
Hus, a senior from Celje, Slovenia (I. gimnazija v Celju) won the shot put with a mark of 14.58m (47-10.00) at the Cherry and Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. on Jan. 21. Her mark is the third best in the WAC this season. She also placed 10th in the weight throw with a toss of 14.85m (48-08.25).
Other track nominees included: New Mexico State senior Melanie Clay … Fresno State senior Shanelle Stevens.

Fresno State
Fresno State began the season at the Run for the Dream competing against several top teams from around California ... freshman Meagan McKee threw 15.55 meters in shot put, which was a personal record for her by four feet, and an indoor provisional mark, to take home the meet title ... freshman Caitlin Byrd won the weight throw with a toss of 18.88 meters ... senior Shanelle Stephens finished third in a time of 7.08 in the 60-meter dash which was a personal best for her ... junior Latrisha Jordan finished second in her heat, with a time of 8.69, in the 55-meter hurdles ... this week, the Bulldogs compete in the Jacksons Invitational in Boise, Idaho, on Friday and Saturday.
Hawai‘i
Hawai’i pole vaulters Robyn Morioka and Cecilia Durocher competed in the 22nd Annual National Pole Vault Summit, last Saturday, in Reno, Nev. ... in their heat, Morioka tied for the top mark but finished second after clearing 11-11.75 (3.65m), while Durocher placed sixth with a mark of 11-1.75 (3.40m) ... Hawai’i also hosted the first of five Sunset Meets last weekend ... the results from the Sunset Meets are not official, as they take place outdoors ... UH will make its second of three trips to Seattle, Wash., this season for the University of Washington Invitational, on Friday and Saturday ... UH will send a contingent of 20 athletes, who will compete in 15 events.
Idaho
Idaho was scheduled to send a small group of competitors to Nampa, Idaho, for the Bronco Invitational last Saturday, however, due to weather concerns the Vandals did not make the trip .... this week, the Vandals will make the short trip to Pullman, Wash., for the Cougar Indoor meet, hosted by Washington State ... the last time the Vandals competed was also at WSU, at the WSU Indoor Preview on Jan. 13-14 ... UI grabbed six individual victories during that meet, highlighted by senior Jeremy Klas and his NCAA top-10 height of 17-4.5 (5.30m) in the pole vault ... freshman Ben Ayesu-Attah posted a 49.75 in the men’s 400-meters, breaking the previous meet record which had stood for eight years.
Louisiana Tech
Louisiana Tech was off this week ... LTU began the season at the UAB Blazer Invite, in Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 13 ... all-American Chelsea Hayes captured the 60-meters and the 200-meters to highlight a total of five individual winners on the women’s side ... she won the 60-meters with a time of 7.41 (course record) and captured the 200-meters with a mark of 24.19 (course record) ... senior Alwayne Green was the Bulldogs top individual performer, as he placed second in the 800-meters with a time of 1:54.87 ... Jermaine Morris placed sixth in the event with a time of 1:56.77 ... this week, Louisiana Tech will compete at the ASTATE Invitational of Friday, in Jonesboro, Ark.
Nevada
Nevada was off last week ... the Wolf Pack’s last action came at the Blue and Orange Opener in Nampa, Idaho, on Jan. 15 ... junior Deborah Amoah won the triple jump competition with a mark of 11.97-meters (39’3.25”) ... she also placed fifth (8.83) in the 60-meter hurdles, despite it being only the second time she had competed in that event ... her mark was the eighth-best in school history ... junior Angelica Earls set a new school record in the 60-meters with her preliminary-round run of 7.59 ... she placed fifth against a field that included two of the top five times in the nation this year ... this week, the Wolf Pack compete in the UW Invitational, on Friday and Saturday, in Seattle, Wash.
New Mexico State
New Mexico State competed at the Cherry and Silver Invitational, in Albuquerque, N.M., last Friday and Saturday ... senior Melanie Clay finished fifth overall in the 600m with a time of 1:36.12 ... the Aggie 4x400m relay team of Clay, junior LaSasha Aldredge, senior Leah Benton and sophomore Zoe Meade ran a time of 3:49.43 to grab fourth place overall for the event ... the Aggies finished with five top-10 finishes, accompanied with the two top-five finishes ... a group of NM State freshman performed well in the 1-mile run ... Caroline Lewiecki, Diana Hawk and Tamara Lementino finished 13th, 14th and 15th overall, respectively ... this week, NM State will be in action on Friday, in Albuquerque, N.M., for the New Mexico Invitational.
Utah State
Utah State competed at the Cherry and Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. ... senior Spela Hus won the shot put with a mark of 14.58m (47-10.00) ... sophomore Kylie Hirschi won the 800 meter run with a time 2:12.63, after an altitude adjustment ... sophomore Silas Pimentel won the 200m dash with a time of 21.55, which is an NCAA automatic qualifying time ... sophomore Bryce Hall won the weight throw with a career-best mark of 18.49m (60-08.00), which is the ninth-best mark in school history ... USU claimed 27 top-10 finishes during the two days of competition ... this week, the Aggies will travel to Pullman, Wash., for the Cougar Indoor, which takes place on Friday and Saturday.
