ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (Jan. 23-29)

Fresno State’s Marianne Jodoin has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, for the week of Jan. 23-29.

Jodoin, a sophomore from Varennes, Canada (Ecole Georges High School), earned a pair of singles victories and a pair of doubles wins at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Athens, Ga., where the Bulldogs competed against Florida International and Missouri. Jodoin, along with partner Tanya Murtagh, opened the weekend with an 8-3 victory over FIU’s No. 2 doubles team of Karyn Guttormsen and Giulietta Boha. She then defeated FIU’s Sarah McLean in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.  On Sunday, Jodoin and Murtagh defeated Missouri’s No. 2 doubles team, Alex Clark and Jamie Mera, 8-3. She ended the tournament with a win against Missouri’s Nina Pantic, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. She was the only Bulldog to have a perfect record on the weekend. This is the second time this season that Jodoin has earned WAC Player of the Week honors. Additionally, she was named WAC Player of the Month for October.

Other women’s nominees included: Idaho sophomore Victoria Lozano … Louisiana Tech junior Vivian ten Dolle.

FRESNO STATE
Fresno State lost twice last weekend at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Athens, Ga. The Bulldogs suffered a 4-3 loss to Florida International on Friday and fell 5-2 to Missouri on Sunday. Sophomore Marianne Jodoin won every match in which she competed on the weekend, earning two straight-set victories in singles and two victories in doubles play.

This week, Fresno travels for two matches, at Sacramento State on Saturday and at UC Davis on Sunday.

HAWAI’I
The Rainbow Wahine were off last week. UH fell to No. 37 Mississippi, 6-1, on Jan. 20, in its last action. Sophomore Xenia Suworowa came out with the only win, a 6-3, 6-2, victory in No. 4 singles play.

Hawai’i is off again this week. UH will next compete during a four-dual road trip that will begin at Loyola Marymount on Feb. 8.

IDAHO

Idaho went 2-1 last week, picking up convincing wins over Seattle University (6-1) on Friday and Portland State (7-0) on Sunday. The Vandals fell to Montana, 4-3, on Sunday. Sophomore Victoria Lozano went 2-1 in singles matches, and 3-0, along with teammate Beatriz Flores, in doubles matches, on the weekend.

This week, the Vandals travel to Gonzaga on Friday.

LOUISIANA TECH

Louisiana Tech picked up two wins on the week, defeating Grambling State (6-1) on Tuesday and McNeese State (5-2) on Sunday. Junior Vivian ten Dolle lost only one point in two singles matches at the No. 2 position, improving to 3-0 on the season.

The Lady Techsters are off this week, returning to the court on Feb. 10 to host Grambling State.

NEVADA

Nevada is in the midst of a two week layoff, until Feb. 10, when the Wolf Pack travel to Utah. Sophomore Michelle Okhremchuk went 3-0 in singles during the Wolf Pack’s last tournament, the Beach Tennis Winter Invite in Long Beach, Calif., from Jan. 20-22.

NEW MEXICO STATE

The Aggies were off last week. Senior Natalia Salum paced NMSU during its last action, from Jan. 20-22, going 3-0 in both singles and doubles. 

This week, the Aggies host Air Force on Friday and Northern Arizona on Sunday.

SAN JOSE STATE
San Jose State opened the season last Tuesday with a 6-1 victory over Cal State Bakersfield. The Spartans then fell in two home matches on the weekend, 7-0 to Santa Clara on Friday, and 5-2 to Oregon on Sunday.

The Spartans are off this week. SJSU will return to action at Cal Poly on Feb. 11.

UTAH STATE

Utah State was off last week.

This week, the Aggies return to action for three matches. USU hosts Weber State on Tuesday, before travelling to Bozeman, Mont., to face New Mexico on Friday and Montana State on Saturday.
