DENVER - Denver's Enej Bonin and Texas State's Jessica Kahts have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Month, respectively, for the month of October.
Bonin, a senior from Koper, Slovenia, won the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional individual title Oct. 21 in Las Vegas, Nev. The tournament win guarantees him a spot in the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., beginning Nov. 8. Bonin went 6-0 in Las Vegas as an individual to bring his season record to 7-2. In the beginning of the month Bonin recorded a win over No. 40 John Lamble from Santa Clara (7-5, 4-6, 6-2) at the Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, N.M.
A junior from Benoni, South Africa, Kahts advanced to the third round in open singles play at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional with a pair of victories. She posted a 7-5, 5-7, 62 victory over Katarine Kikosavlijevic of UT Arlington in the first round before defeating 10th-seeded and 34th-nationally ranked Edyta Cieplucha of SMU by the score of 6-4, 6-2. She also posted victories against Texas A&M's Anna Mamalat at the Rice Invitational and a 6-1, 6-2 win in her only singles match at the Texas State Play Day on Oct. 27. In her doubles action, Kahts teamed with Melissa Hadad in Flight 1 of the Rice Invitational and posted an 8-3 victory over SMU's Dishkova and Fayner in the consolation semifinals and finished the tournament in sixth place. She also teamed with Gabriela Rojas to beat UT Pan American's Reegan Greenwood and Anastasia Burobina by a score of 8-3 in a match at the Texas State Play Day.
