Utah State 67, Alaska Anchorage 57
Utah State captured its first-ever tournament with a 67-57 win against Alaska Anchorage in the championship game of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout Wednesday.
The Aggies got a career high 32-points from senior guard Devyn Christensen to earn the win. For her efforts, Christensen was named MVP.
Franny Vaaulu was also named to the all-tournament team. Vaaulu set the Great Alaska Shootout record for field goal percentage in two games, shooting 81.8 percent (9-of-11) in the two wins.
USU has now won two-straight games and improves to 2-3 this season, while the Seawolves fall to 3-2 with the loss.
Besides Christensen's 32 points, USU was aided by seven points from junior guard Jennifer Schlott. Wasilla, Alaska, native Jenna Johnson added six points and four steals in the win. Vaaulu had six points, five boards and two blocks.
Denver 62, IC Irvine 52
The Pioneers picked up their first win of the season and first for head coach Kerry Cremeans Wednesday, defeating UC Irvine 62-52 at the Bren Events Center. With the win, Denver improves to 1-3 on the season.
Led by a career-tying 21 points from sophomore Morgan Van Riper-Rose. Emiko Smith finished with a season-high 12 points and dished out five assists, while junior Maiya Michel finished with nine rebounds.
Denver shot 43 percent from the field to UC Irvine's 34.
Memphis 89, UT Arlington 76
The Mavericks fell 89-76 to Memphis Wednesday to drop to 0-4 on the season.
UT Arlington shot 42 percent from the field, 25 percent from downtown and 67 percent from the free throw line on the game. The Mavericks were out-rebounded 55-34.
Malaika Green led all players with 28 points, four assists and three steals. Briana Walker added 23 points and eight rebounds.
