Louisiana Tech 82, Denver 77 (2OT)
It took two overtime
periods, but Louisiana Tech picked up its first road win of the season,
defeating Denver 82-77 to open WAC play Saturday. The Lady Techsters
improve to 5-6 on the year and 1-0 in WAC play. The Pioneers drop to 5-7
overall and 0-1 in the WAC.
LA Tech shot 41 percent from the
field, 56 percent from three-point range and 70 percent from the free
throw line on the game. Denver connected on 31 percent from the field,
31 percent from downtown and 85 percent from the charity stripe. DU
out-rebounded LA Tech 55-48.
Kelia Shelton led all players with
a career-high 26 points, while Brittany Lewis added 17. Whitney Frazier posted a
double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Maiya Michel and
Quincey Noonan led a group of five Pioneers in double-digit scoring,
both posting double-doubles of 15 points and 11 boards.
Seattle U 76, Idaho 71
Seattle U picked up its first-ever WAC win, a 76-71 victory at Idaho Saturday. The Redhawks improve to 4-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Vandals fall to 3-9 on the season and 0-1 in the WAC.
Seattle U shot 46 percent from the field, 27 percent from three-point range and 71 percent from the charity stripe on the game. Idaho connected on 53 percent from the field, 60 percent from beyond the arc and 50 percent from the free throw line in the loss. The Vandals won the rebounding battle 37-28, but committed 31 turnovers compared to Seattle U's 17.
Sylvia Shephard led all players with 23 points, while Daidra Brown added 19 points and Ashley Ward had 16.
Stacey Barr paced Idaho with 18 points, while Christina Salvatore and Connie Ballestero added 15 each.
San Jose State 98, Texas State 96
San Jose State snapped a five-game losing skid with a 98-96 win over Texas State Saturday. The Spartans improve to 4-8 on the year and 1-0 in the WAC with the win. The Bobcats fall to 6-5 on the season and 0-1 in WAC play.
SJSU shot 45 percent from the field, 36 percent from downtown and 87 percent from the free throw line on the game. Texas State connected on 44 percent from the field, 40 percent from three-point range and 83 percent from the charity stripe. The Bobcats edged the Spartans on the boards, 43-40, but committed 24 turnovers in the loss.
Ta'Rea Cunnigan led SJSU with 30 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals. Emily Schill posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Riana Byrd finished with 16 points.
Diamond Ford led all players with a career-high 40 points, including six three-pointers. Ashley Ezeh posted a double-double of 26 points and 17 boards.
Utah State 79, UTSA 66 (OT)
Utah State opened WAC play with a 79-66 overtime win over UTSA Saturday. With the win, the Aggies improve to 4-8 on the season and 1-0 in the WAC. The Roadrunners fall to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Utah State shot 40 percent from the field, 41 percent from three-point range and an astounding 96 percent from the free throw line on the game. UTSA shot 30 percent from the field, 29 percent from downtown and 73 percent from the charity stripe in the loss. Both teams grabbed 46 rebounds.
Jennifer Schlott led the Aggies with 24 points, while Devyn Christensen posted 20 points and Jenna Johnson had 17.
UTSA was led by Simone Young with 18 points, while Niaga Mitchell-Cole added 12 points.
UT Arlington 62, New Mexico State 59
The Mavericks overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to earn their
first-ever WAC win on the road, defeating New Mexico State 62-59
Saturday. With the win, UT Arlington improves to 3-8 overall and 1-0 in
the WAC. The Aggies fall to 6-5 on the season and 0-1 in WAC play.
UTA shot 37 percent from the field, 25 percent from beyond the arc and
78 percent from the line on the game. NM State connected on 26 percent
from the field, 21 percent from three-point range and 70 percent from
the charity stripe. The Aggies won the rebounding battle, 50-48.
Desherra Nwanguma led UTA with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Laila Suleiman
had a team-high 13 points, while Aron Garcia grabbed a team-best 12
boards.
Abby Scott led NM State with 18 points, while Stefanie Gilbreath posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.
