LEXINGTON, Ky. – Three WAC volleyball players were selected to the 2012 All-West Region team, announced today by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
UTSA's McKenzie Adams was selected to the team, while New Mexico State's Meredith Hays and Utah State's Shay Sorensen received honorable mention all-region honors.
Adams, the WAC Player of the Year, became the third player in WAC history to be named Player of the Week five times during the season. She finished second in the league in points (4.85) and kills (4.35) per set, while her mark of 3.84 digs was good for fourth. She was also named to the WAC all-tournament team. Last year, Adams was named the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year, and in 2010 she was tabbed the NCAA East Region Freshman of the Year while competing at Virginia.
Hays, the reigning West Region Freshman of the Year, was named MVP of the WAC Tournament after leading the fourth-seeded Aggies to the title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. She ranked third in the WAC in kills (3.92) and points (4.48) and fifth in service aces (0.28) per set. A first team All-WAC selection, she was named WAC Player of the Week once this season.
Sorensen ranked fifth in the WAC in points per set (3.82) and sixth in kills per set (3.13). The two-time WAC Player of the Week helped guide the Aggies to their first-ever WAC regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the WAC Tournament. Sorensen also earned first-team All-WAC honors.
Those named to the all-region teams are now eligible for All-America honors, which will be announced next week during the AVCA Convention.
