CSU Bakersfield (3-0)
Freshman Michaela Paige broke her second school record the weekend at the Arena Invitational on the final day of competition Saturday ... Paige went 2:03.05 in the 200 butterfly preliminaries to lower her own school mark ... in the finals, Paige came in 12th ... Delise Batiza finished 15th in the 1650 freestyle in the third quickest time in school history, 17:28.47 ... her 1000 split of 10:28.75 was also the third fastest in school history ... as a team CSUB finished 12th (204). Cal won the team race (1168.5). The Roadrunners are scheduled to compete against UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 15 at the Hillman Aquatics Complex.
Denver (4-1)
As a team, the Pioneer women finished fifth with 330.5 points at the Iowa Invite ... DU fell to No. 22 Michigan (876.5), Nebraska (670), Iowa (559.5) and Northwestern (472.5), and defeated Washington State (278), Wisconsin-Milwaukee (230) and No. 21 Notre Dame (96) ... sophomore Samantha Corea took first in the 200 backstroke with a school-record and NCAA "B" standard time of 1:53.76 ... freshman Tyra Rooney took sixth in the 1650 Freestyle (16:47.22) ... while senior Tia Totura finished eighth in the 200 Butterfly (2:02.48) ... the Pioneers will return to action Friday Dec. 21, when they travel to Florida Atlantic.
Idaho (3-3)
University of Idaho sophomore Rachel Millet added two more Vandal records to her cache at the AT&T Winter Nationals at Austin, Texas ... in addition to the 100 butterfly record she broke on Friday, she added the 100 freestyle with her time of 50.26 Saturday ... also for Idaho, Kelsie Saxe was clocked in 2:20.54 in the 200 breaststroke ... Jamie Sterbis was timed in 2:02.38 in the 200 butterfly ... the Vandals will take a break and resume competition on Jan. 19 against New Mexico State.
New Mexico State (2-3)
In its first WAC meet of the season, the New Mexico State swimming and diving team suffered a 176-116 loss at Northern Arizona ... sophomore Jessica Legge led the way for the Aggies with a victory in the 100-meter breaststroke ... junior Tricia Kiss scored for the Aggies with a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100 backstroke and 200 breaststroke ... senior Terrin Seaver recorded a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke and third-place showing in the 50 freestyle.
North Dakota (3-4)
The University of North Dakota diving teams wrapped-up a solid weekend at the Mizzou Invitational ... the women did not have a qualifiers advance to the event finals ... Jen Anklan, Alexix Eissinger and Rachael Waldbillig represented UND at the meet ... North Dakota will honor its seniors next Saturday, hosting its final home meet of the season when it welcomes the Northern Iowa to Hyslop Pool.
Northern Arizona (4-2)
NAU opened the meet with a Wall Aquatic Center record in the 200 medley relay and senior Fi Connell broke her own pool record in the 200 backstroke as the Lumberjacks won 14 of 16 events en route to a 176-116 win over WAC foe New Mexico State ... Connell won two individual swimming events as did junior Rachel Palmer and freshman Ellie Morrissey while senior Kristy Ardavanis won both diving events ... Morrissey continued her freshman campaign by winning both sprint events by significant margins ... she took the 50 freestyle in 26.66 before winning the 100 free in 58.26, touching just .11 seconds past the pool record time ... NAU is now 4-2 in dual meets this season, including a 3-0 mark at home.
Northern Colorado (0-2)
The Bears won the Mutual of Omaha Invitational with 1,575 points, while the host Mavericks were second with 1,148.5 points ... The highlight of the meet for the Bears had to be the 200 medley relay team consisting of juniors Courtney Van Oost and Gina Riggle, along with freshmen Jenny LaPorte and Kylie Rathbone ... the quartet combined for a school record time of 1:46.01, breaking the previous mark of 1:46.15 set in 2011 ... Freshman Kelsey Smith and senior Sara Moldenhauer placed first and second, respectively on the 3-meter board ... Smith scored 232, while Moldenhauer tallied 227.80 ... LaPorte continued her stellar weekend, finishing second in the 200 fly with her 2:10.71.
San Jose State (2-1)Following its fifth-place finish at the Arena Invitational in Long Beach, Calif., San Jose State University is ranked 23rd nationally in the second Endless Pools Top 25 Division I Women's Swimming and Diving poll for the 2012-13 season ... the Spartans were ranked 25th in the first poll of the season ... San Jose State's fall season is complete ...the Spartans begin the second half of their season, January 4 in a double dual meet with Cal State Bakersfield and Northern Colorado in Bakersfield.
Seattle U (0-4)The Seattle University women's swim team concluded the fall portion of its schedule as the 64th annual Husky Invitational ... Kevlyn Richards finished in 14th place in the morning preliminaries of the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.59 ... Dilynn D'Agostino finished in 21st place in 2:23.76 ... Richards was the top Redhawk in the 100 freestyle preliminaries, finishing in a tie for 111th place with a time of 54.91 seconds ... the Seattle University women's swim team will next compete against Whitworth University Saturday, Jan. 12, starting at 1 p.m. at the Connolly Center Pool.
Athletes of the Week
Denver's Samantha Corea and Northern Colorado's Kelsey Smith have been named the Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Nov. 23 - Dec. 2.
Corea, a sophomore from Vancouver, British Columbia (Magee Secondary School), recorded three first-place finishes and set two school records at the Iowa Invite this weekend. Corea took first in the 200 backstroke with a meet-record and school-record time of 1:53.76. She also finished first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.56 in the final. In the 100 backstroke preliminaries, Corea swam a school and meet-record time of 53.31. She finished first in the 100 butterfly (53.77) and second in the 50 freestyle (23.02). Corea recorded NCAA "B" standard times in all four individual events she competed in. She was also a member of four Pioneer relay teams, taking sixth in the 200 medley relay (1:42.76) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:45.35), seventh in the 200 freestyle relay (1:34.40) and eighth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:26.89). Corea is currently ranked 10th in the NCAA in the 200 backstroke, 25th in the 100 backstroke and 36th in the 100 butterfly. Denver competed against Big Ten schools Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska and Northwestern. Also at the Iowa Invite was Washington State (Pac-12), Notre Dame (Big East), Iowa State (Big 12), Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Horizon) and Northern Iowa (Missouri Valley).
Smith, a freshman from Temecula, Calif. (Chaparral H.S.), won the 1-meter diving at the Mutual of Omaha Invitational, scoring 26-.7- to win by 60 points. Her score ranks eighth on the school's all-time top 10 list. She also won the 3-meter event with 232.00 points, edging out teammate Sara Moldenhauer who scored 227.80.
Other swimmers nominated: New Mexico State sophomore Jessica Legge, Northern Arizona freshman Ellie Morrissey, Northern Colorado freshman Jenny LaPorte and Seattle U freshman Dilynn D'Agostino.
Other divers nominated: Northern Arizona senior Kristy Ardavanis.
