ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (Feb. 6-12)

Fresno State’s Marianne Jodoin has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 6-12.

Jodoin, a sophomore from Varennes, Canada (Ecole Georges HS), earned a pair of singles victories and a doubles win last weekend against Hawai’i and No. 34 Saint Mary’s. Jodoin opened the weekend with the first win over Hawai’i’s No. 1 doubles team, Katarina Polijakova and Jamie Pawid, 8-5, with partner Tanya Murtagh. She then bested Hawaii’s Barbara Pinterova, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. On Sunday, Jodoin and Murtagh fell to Saint Mary’s No. 1 doubles team, Catherine Isip and Elizabeth Searl, 8-6. She ended the weekend with another big win against Isip, the No. 82 singles player in the nation, 6-3, 6-3, giving her the only singles win against the Gael’s and a perfect singles record for the weekend.

Other women’s nominees included: Hawai’i senior Barbara Pintertova …Idaho freshman Sophie Vickers … Louisiana Tech junior Vivian ten Dolle … Utah State junior Jaci West … Nevada sophomore Michelle Okhremchuk.

TEAM RECAPS
FRESNO STATE

Fresno State went 1-1 last weekend, defeating WAC foe Hawai’i, 5-2, and falling to No. 34 St. Mary’s by the duplicate score of 5-2. Sophomore Marianne Jodoin earned a pair of singles victories and a doubles win, including one over the No. 82 singles player in the nation, St. Mary’s Catherine Isip. Jodoin earned WAC Player of the Week honors for the week for the third time this season.

This week, Fresno State hosts No. 30 Texas A&M on Friday.

HAWAI’I

The Rainbow Wahine went 2-1 last weekend, defeating Loyola Marymount (4-3) and No. 56 UC Irvine (4-3), before losing to WAC foe Fresno State (5-2). Additionally, a dual with San Diego State was postponed due to weather. Senior Barbara Pintertova went 2-1 in both singles and doubles on the week.

This week, Hawai’i is off. The Rainbow Wahine will host Eastern Michigan, on Feb. 29, in its next action.

IDAHO
Last Saturday, the Vandals went 1-1 in a doubleheader in Boise, Idaho. Idaho fell to Boise State, 5-2, and defeated Eastern Washington, 6-1. Freshman Sophie Vickers went undefeated in both singles and doubles on the day.

This week, UI travels for three matches. The Vandals face Colorado State on Friday, Northern Colorado on Saturday, and Wyoming on Sunday.

LOUISIANA TECH

Last week, Louisiana Tech defeated Jackson State, 7-0, on Saturday. Vivian Ten Dolle dominated at the No. 2 singles spot, only losing one point in her last six sets.

This week, the Lady Techsters travel to Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday, Southern on Saturday, and Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday.

NEVADA

Nevada went 1-2 in Utah last weekend, falling to Utah (7-0) and Brigham Young (5-2), before defeating Weber State (7-0).

This week, Nevada travels to Eugene, Ore., to face Seattle on Saturday and Oregon on Sunday.

NEW MEXICO STATE

Last weekend, New Mexico State earned a win over No. 74 Florida International, 4-1, on Friday, before Aggies’ scheduled match against No. 42 Texas Tech on Saturday was canceled due to inclement weather.

This week, NM State remains on the road for a pair of matches at Northern Colorado on Friday and Colorado State on Saturday.

SAN JOSE STATE

San Jose State fell to No. 46 Cal Poly, 5-2, last Saturday. Freshmen Erica Medlin and Isadora Busch each earned singles victories.

This week, the Spartans travel to San Jose State on Friday and then host Sonoma State on Saturday.

UTAH STATE

Utah State routed Idaho State, 7-0, evening its record at .500 for the year. The Aggies won all six singles matches in straight sets.

This week, the Aggies travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to face UNLV on Friday and UC Riverside on Saturday.
