DENVER – Hawai‘i’s T.J. Kua and Fresno State’s Christine Uhalde have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Week for February 13-19.
Kua, a senior from Lihue, Kaua‘i (Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama), tied for eighth place at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Wahiawa, Hawaii, Feb. 15-17. Kua was one of only 11 golfers to shoot under par on Friday, posting a 3-under 69 in windy conditions for a three-round total of 213 (70-74-69). It is the third time in his career that Kua has won a WAC golfer of the week or month award.
Uhalde, a sophomore from Modesto, Calif. (Johansen HS), tied for the individual title at the Peg Barnard Invitational in Stanford, Calif., her first medalist honor of her collegiate career. Uhalde finished the two-round tournament at 3-over par (70-75--145). This is the first time a Fresno State women's golfer has claimed a tournament title since Hali Coppin won the 2010 WAC Championship. It is the first time in her career that Uhalde has won a WAC golfer of the week or month award.
Other men nominated: Brian Sunker, Fresno State; Jonathan Bale, Louisiana Tech; Kevin Lucas, Nevada; and Tanner Higham, Utah State.
