ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (Feb. 13-19)
Idaho’s Almudena Sanz has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, for Feb. 13-19.

Sanz, a sophomore from Oviedo, Spain, went 5-1 last weekend, including an impressive 3-0 in No. 2 singles play. Sanz claimed singles victories over Colorado State’s Lauren Mulhern, 7-6, 6-3, Northern Colorado’s Elizabeth Tapia, 6-2, 6-2, and Wyoming’s Simona Synkova, 6-2, 3-6, (10-7). She, along with partner Sophie Vickers, added two wins at No. 3 doubles, against CSU and UNC. Sanz was then bumped up to play No. 1 doubles with Vicky Lozano, and in the pair’s first match together, they were given the task of facing UW’s Synkova and Veronica Popovici, who won the regional championship and a round at nationals earlier this season. Sanz and Lozano performed admirably against the duo, falling in a tiebreaker, 9-8.

Other women’s nominees included:
Nevada freshman Rymma Maslova … New Mexico State senior Manon Sylvain … Utah State senior Julie Tukuafu.

TEAM RECAPS
FRESNO STATE

Fresno State fell to Texas A&M last Friday, 5-2, in its only action of the week. No. 49 Marianne Jodoin bested Nazari Urbina, 7-6 (4), 6-1, and junior Bianca Modoc added a Bulldog win at the No. 4 singles spot.

This week, the Bulldogs are off. Fresno returns to action on March 2 against No. 38 Georgia State.

HAWAI’I
Hawai’i was off last week and is off again this week. The Rainbow Wahine will host Eastern Michigan, on Feb. 29, in its next action.

IDAHO
Idaho went 2-1 during a three-match road swing last weekend. The Vandals topped Colorado State, 5-2, on Friday and Northern Colorado, 4-3, on Saturday. Idaho fell to Wyoming 4-3 on Sunday to close out the trip. Almundena Sanz went 5-1 last weekend, including an impressive 3-0 in No. 2 singles play on the weekend.

This week, Idaho plays two matches on Saturday, hosting Brigham Young in the morning and travelling to Lewis-Clark State College in the afternoon.

LOUISIANA TECH
Last week, Louisiana Tech went 1-1, falling to Louisiana-Lafayette, 5-2, on Friday and defeating Southeastern Louisiana, 5-2, on Sunday. A Saturday match against Southern was postponed due to rain.

This week, LA Tech returns home to face Texas-Pan American at 12 p.m.  on Saturday.

NEVADA
Nevada went 1-1 on its road trip to Eugene, Ore. The Wolf Pack defeated Seattle, 6-1, on Saturday and fell to Oregon, 6-1, on Sunday.

This week, Nevada is off. The Wolf Pack is in action again on March 2, against UNLV.

NEW MEXICO STATE
New Mexico State defeated Colorado State last Saturday, 6-1, in its only action of the week, as a dual with Northern Colorado was cancelled.

This week, the Aggies host UTPB on Sunday.

SAN JOSE STATE
San Jose State went 2-0 last weekend, downing San Francisco, 4-3, on Friday and Sonoma State, 7-0, on Saturday. The wins evened the Spartans record at .500 on the year.

This week, the Spartans are off. SJSU returns to action on March 2 with a doubleheader against Grambling and Louisiana Tech.

UTAH STATE

Utah State went 1-1 during a two-match visit to Las Vegas, Nev., last weekend. Utah State fell to UNLV, 6-1, on Friday but rallied to beat UC Riverside, 6-1, on Saturday.

This week, the Aggies are off. USU returns to the court on March 3, to host Seattle.
