Fresno State
Fresno State’s women’s track team finished sixth at the WAC Indoor Championship, Feb. 23-25, scoring 71 points ... the Bulldogs were led by Megan Mckee, who won the women’s weight toss (62 ft., 9.25 inches) and the women’s shot put (51 ft., 7.25 in.), earning 20 points for Fresno State ... Je’Nia Sears recorded a season-best leap of 19 ft., 0.75 in. (5.81m) to earn a bronze in the triple jump ... in the 400-meters, Breeauna Thompson took the bronze for the second-straight year, finishing with a time of 55.36 ... Fresno State’s distance medley relay team took third, as the Bulldogs finished with a time of 12:23.69 ... the Bulldogs will transition quickly into the outdoor season, with the Cal Quad Opener on Saturday.
Hawai‘i
Hawai’i women’s track finished seventh at the WAC Indoor Championship, Feb. 23-25, scoring 67 points ... senior Madara Apine’s gold in the triple jump (41-5 (12.62m) was the program’s first in the event at the indoor championships in school history. ... she had previously won silver in each of the past two WAC Indoor meets ... senior TeRina Keenan took the bronze medal in the shot put with a personal best mark of 50-9.25 (15.47m) to win her first career medal in the event ... senior Ashley Aitken just missed out on a medal in the mile, placing fourth with a time of 4:57.34, which is the second fastest time in school history ... Apine will compete this week at the UW Final Qualifier.
Idaho
Idaho’s men’s track team captured the first men’s team title in any WAC sport at the WAC Indoor Championship, Feb. 22-25, while the women’s squad finished second ... the men’s earned the victory in the final race of the championship, the 4x400-meter relay, giving the Vandals 217.5 points, edging out Utah State, which had 212.5 ... the women earned 110 points, improving from last season’s eighth-place finish ... Wayne Phipps was named men’s Coach of the Year ... senior Andrew Blaser was named men’s Track Athlete of the Year and High Point Performer ... sophomore Hannah Kiser was named women’s Track Performer of the Year ... Idaho will be sending select athletes to last chance qualifiers this weekend.
Louisiana Tech
Louisiana Tech men’s track finished third at the WAC Indoor Championship, Feb. 23-25, scoring 77 points, while the women’s squad finished fourth, with 89 points ... this is just the second time in the last 15 WAC Championships (indoor and outdoor) that the Lady Techsters have not placed first ... senior Chelsea Hayes was named women’s Field Athlete of the Year and High Point Performer, after scoring 33 points by herself ... Hayes took gold in the 60-meters, 200-meters and long jump, while also placing sixth in the triple jump ... sophomore Trey Hadnot was named men’s Track Athlete of the Year, after winning the 200-meters and 400-meters.
Nevada
The Nevada women’s track team finished fifth at the WAC Indoor Championship, Feb. 23-25, scoring 86 points ... sophomore Samantha Diaz, last season’s champion, took second in the women’s mile with a time of 4:48.80 ... in the 60-meter dash, freshman Kashae Knox took silver with a time of 7.55 seconds, junior Angelica Earls finished in third with a time of 7.60 ... Knox was named women’s Freshman of the Year ... Deborah Amoah took second in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal record time of 8.60 seconds ...Nevada’s senior La Tijera Avery took first place finish in the high jump, clearing a mark of 1.76m ... Amoah, Avery, Earls and Knox will compete in a last-chance qualifier this weekend to attempt to meet NCAA standards.
New Mexico State
New Mexico State finished third at the WAC Indoor Championship, Feb. 22-25, scoring 94 points ... the Aggies earned eight medals and placed seven athletes on the all-WAC second-team ... juniors Courtney and Camille Schultz finished first and third, respectively, in the 5,000-meters ... sophomore Zoe Meade finished second overall in the pentathlon, with 3,612 points ... senior Jndia Cleveland finished third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.67 ... Cleveland also finished second in the long jump with a distance of 5.84m ... junior LaSasha Aldredge finished second in the 400m with a time of 55.21, a new school record ... senior Bellosie Frazier finished second in the weight throw of 18.10m, a new school record.
Utah State
Utah State’s women’s team finished first at the WAC Indoor Championship, scoring 144 points, while the men finished second, scoring 112.5 points ... Head Coach Greg Gensel was named women’s Coach of the Year ... Nic Bowens was named Freshman of the Year, after finishing second in the 60m and the 200m ... winning a WAC individual title in their respective events were seniors; Joe Canavan (shot put), Sonia Grabowska (pole vault), Katelyn Heiner (400m), Chio Lopez (mile) and Daniel Howell, (3,000m, 5,000m), along with sophomore Bryce Hall (weight throw) ... three athletes will attend the UW Qualifier in Seattle, Wash. on Saturday; Grabowska (pole vault), Howell (distance runs) and Kim Quinn (distance runs).
