ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (Jan. 23-29)
Utah State’s McKenzie Davis has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 5.
Davis, a freshman from Salt Lake City, Utah (Cottonwood HS), went undefeated in both singles and doubles play last weekend as she helped Utah State to a 2-1 record, with wins against Weber State (5-2) and Montana State (5-1). Davis won all three of her singles matches in straight sets, as she went 2-0 at the No. 3 singles position and 1-0 at the No. 2 spot. In doubles play, Davis teamed with junior Jaci West for three doubles wins at the No. 1 position.
Other women’s nominees included: Fresno State freshman Aishwarya Agrawal … Idaho sophomore Vicky Lozano … New Mexico State senior Natalia Salum.
TEAM RECAPS
FRESNO STATE
Fresno State went 1-1 against a pair of ranked foes on the weekend, defeating No. 58 UC Davis, 5-2, on Sunday and falling to No. 48 Sacramento State. Freshman Aishwarya Agrawal earned a pair of singles victories and a doubles win on the weekend.
This week, Fresno hosts Hawai’i on Saturday in a conference match, and then travels to face No. 34 St. Mary’s on Sunday.
HAWAI’I
The Rainbow Wahine were off last week. UH fell to No. 37 Mississippi, 6-1, on Jan. 20, in its last action. Sophomore Xenia Suworowa came out with the only win, a 6-3, 6-2, victory in No. 4 singles play.
This week, UH begins a four-dual road trip at Loyola Marymount on Wednesday. The Rainbow Wahine then face No. 56 UC Irvine on Thursday, before visiting WAC foe Fresno State on Saturday. The California road swing comes to a close at San Diego State on Monday.
IDAHO
Last week, the Vandals defeated Gonzaga, 5-2, on Friday. Victoria Lozano was nearly flawless, as she won 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 1 singles slot. She also won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, with teammate Beatriz Flores.
This week, Idaho travels to Boise, Idaho, for a doubleheader on Saturdat, against Boise State in the morning and Eastern Washington in the afternoon.
LOUISIANA TECH
Louisiana Tech was off last week. In its last action, LTU picked up two wins on the week, defeating Grambling State (6-1) on Jan. 24 and McNeese State (5-2) on Jan. 29. Junior Vivian ten Dolle lost only one point in two singles matches at the No. 2 position, improving to 3-0 on the season.
This week, the Lady Techsters travel to Jackson State on Saturday.
NEVADA
Nevada was off the last two weeks. This week, the Wolf Pack return to action with a three game road swing through Utah. Nevada faces No. 52 Utah on Friday, Brigham Young on Saturday and Weber State on Sunday.
NEW MEXICO STATE
The Aggies went 1-1 last weekend, defeating Northern Arizona, 4-3, and falling to Air Force, 6-1. Senior Natalia Salum continued her stellar year with two straight-set victories in singles to improve to a perfect 5-0. She also went 1-1 in doubles matches.
This week, the Aggies travel to Lubbock, Texas, for matches against No. 74 Florida International, on Friday, and No. 42 Texas Tech, on Saturday.
SAN JOSE STATE
San Jose State was off last week. This week, SJSU will return to action at No. 46 Cal Poly on Saturday.
UTAH STATE
Utah State went 2-1 last week, defeating Weber State (5-2) on Tuesday, falling to New Mexico (4-3) on Friday, before downing Montana State (6-1) on Saturday. Freshman McKenzie Davis went undefeated in both singles and doubles play on the week, earning WAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honors.
This week, the Aggies travel to Pocatello, Idaho, to face Idaho State on Thursday.
