ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (Feb. 20-26)
Idaho’s Molly Knox has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for Feb. 20-26.
Knox, a senior from West Richland, Wash. (Portland State), had a perfect 4-0 combined record last weekend as Idaho picked up two victories. She won at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4, over Morgan Anderson of Brigham Young and dominated 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles against Samantha Teigen of Lewis Clark-State College. At No. 2 doubles Knox, with teammate Sophie Vickers, won 8-5 over BYU’s squad of Anderson and Desiree Tran, and won 8-3 over LCSC’s duo of Teigen and Florencia Martina.
Other women’s nominees included: Louisiana Tech junior Rymma Maslova … New Mexico State senior Manon Sylvain.
TEAM RECAPS
FRESNO STATE
Fresno was off last week. In its last action, Fresno State fell to Texas A&M, 5-2, on Feb. 17. No. 49 Marianne Jodoin bested Nazari Urbina, 7-6 (4), 6-1, and junior Bianca Modoc added a Bulldog win at the No. 4 singles spot.
This week, Fresno returns to action on Friday against No. 50 Georgia State. The Bulldogs then have a doubleheader on Sunday, hosting No. 69 Cal State Northridge and No. 51 Santa Clara.
HAWAI’I
Hawai’i was off last week, but the UH made its debut in the ITA Rankings, earning the No. 52 spot in the Feb. 28 poll.
This week, the Rainbow Wahine will host Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, No. 14 Michigan on Friday and Iowa State on Saturday.
IDAHO
Idaho won two matches last Saturday, defeating Brigham Young, 4-2, and Lewis-Clark State College, by the dominant score of 7-0. Senior Molly Know went undefeated on the the day, winning both of her singles and doubles matches.
This week, Idaho travels to face UTEP, on Friday, and New Mexico, Saturday, before closing the weekend with a conference dual against New Mexico State on Sunday.
LOUISIANA TECH
Last week, Louisiana Tech defeated Texas-Pan American on Saturday, 6-1. Junior Alena Erofeyeva did not lose as point (6-0, 6-0) against Cindy Sands at the No. 6 spot, as Erofeyeva remained undefeated in the spring, at 7-0.
This week, LA Tech hosts two matches. The Lady Techsters face conference foe San Jose State on Friday and Southern Miss on Saturday.
NEVADA
Nevada was off last week. UN went 1-1 in its last action during a road trip to Eugene, Ore. The Wolf Pack defeated Seattle, 6-1, on Feb. 18 and fell to Oregon, 6-1, on Feb. 19.
The Wolf Pack is in action again, travelling to Las Vegas, Nev., to face rival UNLV on Friday and Northern Arizona on Saturday.
NEW MEXICO STATE
New Mexico State defeated UTPB, 7-0, last Sunday. Senior co-captain Manon Sylvain followed up a doubles victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Breigh Shotwell of UTPB at No. 1 singles.
This week, New Mexico State hosts rival New Mexico on Friday and then Idaho on Sunday, in a WAC contest.
SAN JOSE STATE
San Jose State was off last week.
This week, the Spartans return to action on Friday with a doubleheader in Ruston, La., against Grambling and WAC foe Louisiana Tech.
UTAH STATE
Utah State was off last week. In its last action, USU went 1-1 during a two-match visit to Las Vegas, Nev., on Feb. 17-18.
This week, USU returns to the court on Friday, to host Seattle.
