Nevada 3, Louisiana Tech 2


RENO, Nev.  – (Nevada Media Relations) University of Nevada (17-16, 2-2 WAC) sophomore  Bradey Shipley pitched eight shutout innings but had to survive a Louisiana Tech (17-17, 1-3 WAC) ninth inning rally to win a Western Athletic Conference game 3-2 at Peccole Park Friday afternoon.  With the victory the Wolf Pack improved 17-16 and 2-2 in WAC play while LA Tech is now 17-17 and 1-3 in conference action.

With the Pack leading 3-0 Shipley (6-2) left after eight innings and closer Matt Gardner came in to pitch the ninth inning.  Gardner walked two and Tim Culligan replaced him on the mound.  A walk and two RBI single closed the gap to 3-2.  Culligan had to leave the game after an apparent injury on the single up the middle and third baseman Garrett Yrigoyen followed him on the mound and walked one and hit another to load the bases with one out.  Righty Sean Prihar, the fourth pitcher of the inning recorded the final two outs on a popup and ground ball to earn his first save of the season.

Left fielder Tommy Niebergall doubled to start the game and scored on Brooks Klein’s RBI double in the first to give the Pack an early 1-0 lead where it remained until the seventh inning.  After two walks Niebergall’s second double of the game scored two more and Nevada had its three runs for the game.

Hawai‘i 3, Saint Mary's 2


HONOLULU – (UH Media Relations) The University of Hawai'i baseball team kept its winning ways, topping Saint Mary's College, 3-2, in their series opener on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium. The Rainbows, winners of six of their last seven games, improved to 20-13 on the season while the Gaels dropped to 15-16.

Matt Sisto won his personal best sixth game of the season to improve to 6-3. He allowed two runs on five hits in seven complete innings of work, at one point retiring eight consecutive SMC hitters. Lawrence Chew worked a scoreless eighth and ninth innings for his first career save.

Collin Bennett led UH batting 2-3 with two RBI, scoring his second run in the fourth inning to regain the lead for Hawai'i. The Gaels tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning, but Bennett and Breland Almadova both hit safely to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. Bennett later scored from third on an errant SMC pick-off attempt at first base.
