Sacramento State 10, New Mexico State 7


SACRAMENTO, Calif. -(Sacramento State Media Relations) The Sacramento State baseball team scored four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to rally from an early five-run deficit and defeated No. 25 ranked New Mexico State in a Western Athletic Conference game on Sunday afternoon at John Smith Field.
 
After being shutout with just two hits through the first four innings, the Hornets (18-18, 3-3 WAC) scored 10 runs on 13 hits with no errors in the win. The Aggies (28-9, 4-2 WAC) tallied seven runs on 12 hits with one error.
 
Sacramento State was stymied in the early innings but broke through in the fifth inning with Andrew Ayers’ monster two-run home run over the left field fence. Down 5-2 heading into the sixth, the Hornets hung a four spot on the scoreboard to take the lead for the first time in the series.

San Jose State 11, Fresno State 2


FRESNO, Calif. – (SJSU Media Relations) A big sixth-inning rally and another shut-down performance by the bullpen allowed San Jose State to sweep Fresno State for the first time since 2002 as the Spartans won Sunday’s series finale at Beiden Field 11-2.

San Jose State’s sweep of the Bulldogs was also their first in Fresno since 2000. The Spartans (17-14, 3-0 WAC) are 3-0 in Western Athletic Conference play for the first time since 2005 and three games above .500 for the first time this season. They have won seven of their last nine games.

“Anytime you go on the road, if you can win the series on the road then you’re doing a tremendous job,” said San Jose State head coach Sam Piraro. “Winning on the road is a difficult thing. This team has been a pretty good road team.”

Nevada 4, Louisiana Tech 3


RENO, Nev.  – (Nevada Media Relations) The University of Nevada (19-16, 4-2 WAC) baseball scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to down Louisiana Tech (17-19, 1-5 WAC) 4-3 at Peccole Park Sunday afternoon.  The Wolf Pack swept the three-game Western Athletic Conference series and is now 4-2 in conference play and 19-16 overall.  The Bulldogs dropped to 17-19 overall and 1-5 in WAC action.

The win was the 899th for Pack head coach Gary Powers and win 900 could happen on Tuesday when Nevada hosts San Francisco at 2 p.m.

Trailing 3-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth left fielder Tommy Niebergall walked and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Brooks Klein.  Austin Byler was hit by pitch and after a pitching change Kewby Meyer walked to load the bases.  Jay Anderson reached on a fielders choice that scored the tying run as he beat out the throw to first base that could have ended the game as LA Tech attempted to turn the double play.    Carlos Escobar reached on a throwing error by Bulldog third baseman Beau Bayless as Byler scored the go ahead run.

Closer Matt Gardner (9) came out of the bullpen and recorded the final three outs to earn his ninth save of the season.

HONOLULU – (UH Media Relations) The University of Hawai'i baseball team was swept by Saint Mary's in a series finale doubleheader on Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium. The Rainbows fell 6-2 in 10 innings in the opener, then dropped game two, 5-3, to fall to 21-15 on the season.

Saint Mary's (16-17) had all the momentum in game one, as Gael starter Kyle Barraclough cruised through the Rainbow lineup through six innings. SMC scored a pair of runs in the third inning and looked poised for the game one win.

The 'Bows finally got to Barraclough in their final at bats of the scheduled seven-inning game. Kaeo Aliviado singled, then Pi'ikea Kitamura drew a base on balls to put Aliviado in scoring position, forcing Barraclough out of the game in favor of Patrick Keane.  After a Trevor Podratz sacrifice, Collin Bennett hit a blooper to centerfield to score both runners and send the game into extra innings.
