DENVER – San Jose State’s Jessica Garcia and Fresno State’s Michelle Moses have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 16-22. This is the first-ever honor for Garcia and the second honor of the season and seventh overall (five Pitcher, two Hitter) for Moses.
Garcia, a sophomore catcher/third baseman from Redlands, Calif., hit .563 (9-of-16) with three doubles, one home run and 13 RBI last week. She posted a .588 on-base percentage and a .938 slugging percentage as the Spartans defeated No. 16 Stanford and went 2-1 at Utah State. Garcia had multiple hits in all three games at Utah State and drove in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning against No. 16 Stanford. She tied the San Jose State single-game record for doubles with three in the final game of the Utah State series, becoming the seventh player in WAC history to hit three doubles in a WAC game. In the Spartans’ 11-2 win over the Aggies, Garcia drove in four runs, and in the 9-1 six-inning win, she drove in five runs as she hit her second home run of the season.
Moses, a senior from Paso Robles, Calif., went 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA and 12 strikeouts in two appearances last week. She held New Mexico State to just one run and a .087 batting average, allowing only four hits in her two complete-game victories. In the series opener, she threw her second-straight one-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory. The one hit she allowed was an infield single to the first batter she faced. It was her WAC-leading 11th shutout of the season. In her second start of the weekend, Moses took a perfect game into the sixth inning. She didn’t allow a hit until there were two outs in the top of the sixth and gave up one seventh-inning run, her first allowed in 22.2 innings pitched. Moses finished the game with six strikeouts and no walks. She is now 20-11 on the season with a 1.80 ERA.

Hawai‘i’s Stephanie Ricketts went 1-1 with a 1.27 ERA and seven strikeouts ... Michelle Jones of Louisiana Tech went 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA and seven strikeouts ... Nevada’s Mallary Darby went 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA, including a complete-game shutout of No. 14 Hawai‘i ... New Mexico State’s Celisha Walker posted a 0.78 ERA in nine innings pitched last week ... Amanda Pridmore of San Jose State went 3-1 with a 2.02 ERA and 11 strikeouts and a win over No. 16 Stanford last week ... Utah State’s Shelbi Tyteca posted six strikeouts in two appearances on the week.
