WAC IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
In the April 10 ITA Rankings, Fresno State is the lone ranked WAC team at No. 34.
Individually, the WAC has two singles players ranked in the top 125. Remi Boutillier of Fresno State is the top-ranked WAC player, at No. 25, while his teammate Francis Alcantara is No. 52. The pairing of Alcantara and Boutillier are also ranked No. 80 in the nation in doubles.
TEAM RECAPS
FRESNO STATE
No. 34 Fresno State went 2-1 last week. The Bulldogs defeated UC Santa Barbara 5-2, fell to No. 8 Pepperdine 5-2 and finished out the regular season with a 7-0 victory over Pacific.
This week, the Bulldogs are the top seed in the WAC Men’s Tennis Tournament, which will take place Friday-Sunday in Las Cruces, N.M. On Saturday, Fresno State will face the winner of the No. 4 New Mexico State/No. 5 Nevada match.
HAWAI’I
Hawai’i was off last week.
This week, Hawai’i will face No. 6 Utah State in the first round of the WAC Men’s Tennis Tournament on Friday.
IDAHO
Last week, Idaho was off.
This week, the Vandals are the No. 2 seed in the WAC Men’s Tennis Tournament in Las Cruces, N.M. On Saturday, Idaho will face the winner of the No. 3 Hawai’i/No. 6 Utah State match.
NEVADA
Nevada went 2-0 last week, running its record to .500 for the regular season. The Wolf Pack defeated Utah State, 5-2, on Friday in a WAC match, clinching the fifth spot in the conference. On Saturday, Nevada wrapped up the regular season with a 6-1 victory over UC Davis.
This week, Nevada will battle No. 4 seed New Mexico State on Friday in the WAC Men’s Tennis Tournament in Las Cruces, N.M.
NEW MEXICO STATE
Last week, New Mexico State defeated Western New Mexico 7-0.
This week, No. 4 NMSU will face No. 5 Nevada, on Friday, in the first round of the WAC Men’s Tennis Tournament.
UTAH STATE
Last week, Utah State went 1-2 to close out the regular season. The Aggies opened with a 4-3 victory over Weber State, but fell to Idaho State, 4-3, and Nevada, 5-2.
This week, No. 6 Utah State will face No. 3 Hawai’i, on Friday, in the first round of the WAC Men’s Tennis Tournament.
WAC MEN’S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (April 9-15)
DENVER – Fresno State’s Remi Boutillier has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, for the week of April 9-15.
Boutillier, a senior from Briancon, France (Externat Notre Dame), went 2-1 in singles and 3-0 doubles against No. 55 UCSB, No. 7 Pepperdine and Pacific last week. At No. 1 singles, No. 25 Boutillier defeated UCSB’s 122th-ranked Mathieu Forget, 6-3, 6-1, and Pacific’s Ivan Castro, 6-1, 6-0, on Saturday. At No. 1 doubles, he and partner Francis Alcantara topped UCSB’s Forget and Benjamin Recknagel, 9-8 (3). Then, the 80th-ranked duo upset Pepperdine’s sixth-ranked team of Alex Llompart and Finn Tearney, 8-5. On Saturday, Boutillier earned his 100th-career doubles win against Pacific’s Ivan Castro and Alex Hamilton, 8-3, with Alcantara. With his two singles wins, Boutillier improved his career singles record to 96-31, moving him into fifth place on the school’s all-time singles wins list. His only loss of the week came against Pepperdine’s Sebastian Fanselow, the ninth-ranked player in the nation.
