WAC Baseball Recaps - April 28
Sacramento State 8, San Jose State 3

SAN JOSE, Calif. – (Sacramento State Media Relations) The Sacramento State baseball team won its third league series of the season with an 8-3 win at San Jose State in a Western Athletic Conference game on Saturday at Municipal Stadium.

Head coach Reggie Christiansen’s squad will be looking for a sweep with game three scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow.

The Hornets (24-19, 7-4 WAC) have now won three of their first four WAC series this season after scoring eight runs on 14 hits with one error on Saturday. Sacramento State opened up WAC play by taking two-of-three at Louisiana Tech before winning one of three games at home against No. 25 New Mexico State. Since that series loss, the Hornets have taken two-of-three from Nevada and the first two games at San Jose State.

The Spartans (19-19, 4-4 WAC) tallied three runs on seven hits with no errors. San Jose State entered the weekend tied with Hawai’i for second in the WAC standings but have slid to fifth. The Hornets were tied for fourth but, with back-to-back wins, have climbed to second, behind only NMSU.

Louisiana Tech 4, Hawai‘i 1

RUSTON - (LT Media Relations) Ryan Gebhardt went 3-for-5 from the plate and the Bulldog pitching staff allowed just one run as Louisiana Tech (20-23, 3-9 WAC) defeated Hawai'i (25-18, 5-4 WAC), 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.

Gebhardt's three singles raised his batting average to .331 and pinch hitter Kody Neel recorded an RBI double in his lone at-bat to give Tech a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning. Justin Gordey went 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run as the senior center fielder plated pinch runner Taylor Burch on a two strike squeeze bunt to give Tech a 4-1 lead.  Alex Williams hit an RBI double in the fifth inning to give Tech a one-run lead and never looked back.

Trevor Petersen (4-4) recorded his fourth win as the junior right-hander threw 5.1 innings and allowed just one run while striking out two. Scott Squier (3-3) was charged with his third loss on the year after allowing two runs on five in 4.2 innings. Fresno State 14, Nevada 2

RENO, Nev. - (FS Media Relations) The Fresno State baseball team routed Nevada 14-2 in a Western Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at William Peccole Park.

Bulldog junior starting pitcher Justin Haley dealt eight solid innings. He struck out nine and allowed just two runs and a walk in a workman's day from the hill that also featured a clean effort by the defense.

"We played outstanding defense today - that's why Haley got to the eighth inning," Fresno State head coach Mike Batesole said. "When you play defense like that, it keeps the pitch count down and allows [Haley] to keep grinding and pounding the zone."

The 'Dogs wasted no time getting it going and kept the pressure on the Pack all day long.

Baylor 15, New Mexico State 5 (8)

WACO, Texas
- (NMSU Media Relations) The No. 25 New Mexico State baseball team (30-13) took an early lead on No. 3 Baylor (38-8) but dropped the game 15-5 at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas, Saturday, April 28.

The Aggies were up 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Baylor took momentum after a questionable call at first base that resulted in a potential double-play being taken away because it appeared that sophomore first baseman Tanner Rust was pulled off the bag.

"Team's have to be able to handle different types of situations and we have done that pretty much all year," head coach Rocky Ward said. "I'm disappointed in the final score but we have to put it behind us and focus on what we have ahead."

The Aggies have a midweek game against Texas Tech at home before traveling to Hawai'i for a three-game Western Athletic Conference series.
