DENVER - Fresno State's Rufie Fessler and Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Week for March 26-April 1.
Fessler, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif. (Bakersfield College), finished in a tie for 14th at the Stanford Intercollegiate over the weekend. Fessler opened the tournament with a 5-under par 65 to become the first round leader. He finished with a 4-over par 214 (65-77-72). The 65 was the best of any golfer in the tournament during the three rounds and is tied for the fifth lowest round by a WAC golfer this year. It is the first time that Fessler has won a WAC golfer of the week or month award.
Mortellaro, a senior from Phoenix, Ariz. (Mesa Distance Learning), tied for third place at the Anteater Invitational, March 26-27. Mortellaro improved every round to finish with a 9-over par 222 (75-74-73), just two strokes behind the winner. It is the 14th time in her career that Mortellaro has won a WAC golfer of the week or month award.
