WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
Idaho Vandals
Idaho did not compete last weekend ... the Vandals will send full teams out for the first time this season when they compete at the Sundodger Invitational at Seattle, Wash ... last time out Idaho sent group of five freshmen to the Clash of the Inland Northwest (Sept. 1) and came away with a third place team women's team finish ... all five runners placed in the top 21 running in their first collegiate races ... Idaho's men sent a partial group of mostly freshmen and first-time competitors to the Clash of the Inland Northwest (Sept. 1) finishing third in the team standings behind No. 26 Washington State and Gonzaga.
Louisiana Tech

New Mexico State Aggies
The Aggie men finished second overall with a score of 32 behind host school UTEP at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational ... NMSU claimed five of the top 10 overall finishes ... the top men's finisher for the second consecutive meet was senior Jonah Ruybalid, finishing the 5K in 15:27.09 ... the women's squad placed first overall in their first team scored event of the season with a score of 25, defeating rival UTEP ... the Aggies claimed six of the top 10 finishes in the women's event ... Jenna Padilla led the way with a time of 19:06.88 on the 5K course ... The Aggies host their only home meet of the season on Sunday with the Kachina Classic.
San Jose State Spartans
The Spartans will run in two meets this weekend ... the women start Fri., Sept. 14 at the San Francisco State Invitational and Sat., Sept. 15 at the Aztec Invitational ... the men will run at the Aztec Invitational only ... San Jose State's season-opener found them in San Francisco, Calif., (Sept. 1) running in the USF Invitational ... the women placed seventh in the 19 team field ... the men scored a ninth overall, finishing better than eight other schools at the meet ... for the women junior Aylin Mejia was San Jose State's top-finisher in 24th place with a time of 18:48.20 ... Rebecca Garcia followed in 34th (18:57) ... sophomore Mueen Ghoury finished the 8K course in 26:32.00, leading the way for the men.
Seattle University Redhawks
The Redhawks cross country team will return to competition next weekend ... the top runners for both the men's and women's teams will head to the National Catholic Championships, hosted by the Notre Dame on Fri., Sept. 14 ... the rest of the squad will stay close to home, competing at the Sundodger Invitational, hosted by Washington at Lincoln Park in West Seattle, Wash., Sat., Sept. 15 ... sophomore Baxter Arguinchona rejoins the team after competing at the 2012 World Mountain Running Championships in Ponte di Legno, Italy ... he was a member of the United States Junior Men's Mountain Running Team ... Arguinchona completed the 8.8K course, entirely uphill, in 51:22, finishing in 56th place out of 71 runners.
University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks
UT Arlington's men's team posted a perfect score of 15 by taking the top five spots at the UTA Season Opener ... UTA's top two finishers, Virgilio Martinez and Craig Lautenslager, both are true freshmen who were competing in their first event ... the Maverick women placed third in the meet behind Baylor and SMU ... the youthful UT Arlington women's cross country team has cracked the USTFCCCA's Regional rankings this week, debuting at No. 14 ... UTA's men's and women's teams will return to action Saturday at the Louisiana Tech Mook 4 in Ruston, La.
UTSA Roadrunners
The Roadrunners successfully defended their team championship at Saturday's TLU Invitational ... UTSA claimed the top three spots on the individual leaderboard (six of top seven overall) en route to 17 points ... leading the way was sophomore Mike Medrano, who won his first career individual title a week after leading the squad with a fourth-place performance at Texas ... the Roadrunners successfully defended their team championship at the TLU Invitational, claiming the top seven spots on the individual leaderboard en route to a perfect team score of 15 points ... leading the way was junior Alyssa Diaz, who won her first career individual title. The Roadrunners will host the UTSA Ricardo Romo Classic on Friday evening.
Texas State Bobcats
The Texas State men's team did not record a team score at the UT Arlington Invitational, as they only had three runners compete ... freshman Tyrone Jackson performed well for the Cats as the recorded a time of 15:57.1 for 21st place ... The women's team had a diverse set of runners this past weekend, as they had two of their top runners sit out of the UTA Opener ... despite being without a strong group, the Bobcats captured fourth place ... Junior Michelle Jones was the top Bobcat runner, placing eighth overall ... both the men's and women's teams will compete at the Rice Invitational this Friday in Houston.
Utah State Aggies
Utah State's men's and women's cross country teams return to action on Sat., Sept. 15 when it travels to Bozeman, Mont., to compete in the Montana State Invitational .... USU's men moved up to seventh-place in the Mountain Region in the latest USTFCCCA rankings ... in their last meet Aggies junior Kyle McKenna placed third overall (18:49.73) in the men's 4 mile race at the Aggie Invitational ... the men finished fourth ... the women placed third ... senior Alex Litzsinger finished fifth (17:58.79) in the women's 5K ... freshmen Tylee Newman and Jacqueline Winterton crossed the finish line 10th (18:10.68) and 18th (18:40.52), respectively.
WAC NOTES
UT Arlington's Virgilio Martinez and UTSA's Alyssa Diaz Have Been Named the Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Athletes of the Week
UT Arlington's Virgilio Martinez and UTSA's Alyssa Diaz have been named the Western Athletic Conference men's and women's Cross Country Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Sept. 3-9.
Martinez, a freshman from Arlington, Texas (Arlington HS), placed first individually at the UTA Season Opener in Arlington this past Saturday. Martinez ran to the top spot in the Mustangs season opening 5K race in his first collegiate contest, posting a time of 14:55.8. Martinez outpaced the second-place finisher by nearly nine seconds, leading UTA to a perfect score of 15 to win its lone home meet of the season.
Diaz, a junior from Hereford, Texas (Hereford HS), led a UTSA contingent that finished first through seventh at the TLU Invitational, notching her first career victory. Diaz circled the 5K course in a time of 18:41.24, as the Roadrunners successfully defended their team championship with a perfect score of 15.

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2012 WAC Cross Country Championship travels to Ruston, Louisiana. This year's championships will be hosted by Louisiana Tech University and will take place at the Lincoln Parish Park Course on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Utah State men and Idaho women claimed the championships last year.

NCAA REGIONALS
The 2012 Cross Country Regionals will be held at nine sites throughout the country, Friday, Nov. 9. WAC teams will be represented in three locations. The West Region will be held in Seattle, Wash., (Washington). The Mountain Region will be held in Fort Collins, Colo., (Colorado State), while the South Central Regional (Arkansas) will take place in Fayetteville, Ark.
