Enej Bonin and
Sophia Bergner have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of Jan. 21-27.
Bonin, a senior from Koper, Slovenia, went 1-1 on the weekend, competing against two top 40 players. In singles play, No. 47 Enej Bonin defeated ITA nationally-ranked No. 35 Anis Ghorbel 6-2, 6-4 of No. 53 Drake as part of the second day of the ITA National Indoor Kickoff in Malibu, Calif. He earned Denver's lone point as the Pioneers bowed out to the Bulldogs, 6-1. He and partner Jens Vorkefeld fell to the No. 16 doubles team Ghorbel and James McKie, 8-6. Bonin opened the weekend with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to No. 6 Sebastian Fanselow of No. 7 Pepperdine.
A senior from Schechen, Germany, Bergner led the way last weekend for the Pioneers by teaming with Steffi Rath to post an 8-2 win in No. 1 doubles before following with a 6-0, 6-0 showing in No. 1 singles action. Bergner blanked Louisiana-Lafayette's Sophie van den Aarssen, after her morning doubles win over van den Aarssen and Nicole Breaux.
