DENVER – Seattle U junior forward Kacie Sowell has been named Western Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 31-Jan 6. This is her second WAC Player of the Week honor.
The Ventura, Calif. native posted a pair of double-doubles and averaged 21.5 points on 71.4 percent shooting, 11.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals, 1.5 assists and 1.0 blocks per game as the Redhawks went 2-0 on the week to remain the only unbeaten team in WAC play. Sowell opened the week with a career-high 24 points to go along with 12 rebounds in an overtime win against Utah State. She followed it up with 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks in a win over San Jose State. Sowell is currently tied for the WAC lead in double-doubles with seven this season.
Other nominees included: Maiya Michel of Denver averaged 10.3 points, 12.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.0 blocks per game as the Pioneers went 3-0 on the week ... Idaho’s Stacey Barr averaged 16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 3.5 three-pointers per game as the Vandals went 1-1 on the week ... Kelia Shelton of Louisiana Tech averaged 16.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals as the Lady Techsters went 1-1 on the week ... New Mexico State’s Stefanie Gilbreath averaged 19.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game as the Aggies went 3-0 on the week ... Jenna Johnson of Utah State averaged 17.7 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 2.0 assists as the Aggies went 2-1 on the week.
