WAC NOTES

CSU Bakersfield (4-4)
CSU Bakersfield defeated Northern Colorado 167-132 before dropping a 178-112 decision to No. 23 San Jose State in a Western Athletic Conference women's swimming tri-dual last Friday ... Michaela Paige won her 9th and 10th individual races of the season during the tri-dual ... CSUB was 0-2 in dual competition last Saturday ... UNLV defeated the Roadrunners 188-96 while Fresno State defeated CSUB 173-125 ... Ali Gillespie posted a victory in the 200 freestyle ... Paige finished second in the 500 free (5:07.88), second in the 200 butterfly (2:08.46), and fourth in the 400 IM (4:39.79). The Roadrunners travel to San Diego next Saturday for a tri-dual UC San Diego and Loyola Marymount. 

Denver (5-1)
The University of Denver women's swimming and diving team defeated Florida Atlantic 153-88 ... sophomore diver Dana Gau set a Denver record with 274.50 points in the 1-meter dive, as she took first in the event and made an NCAA zone-cut ... sophomore Samantha Corea (Vancouver, British Columbia) tallied a pair of relay victories to go along with an individual first-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:00.71) ... senior Tia Totura won the 200 butterfly (2:03.12) ... the Pioneers will return to action Saturday Jan. 12 when they head north to take on Wyoming.

Idaho (3-3)
University of Idaho sophomore Rachel Millet added two more Vandal records to her cache at the AT&T Winter Nationals at Austin, Texas ... in addition to the 100 butterfly record she broke on Friday, she added the 100 freestyle with her time of 50.26 ... also for Idaho, Kelsie Saxe was clocked in 2:20.54 in the 200 breaststroke ... Jamie Sterbis was timed in 2:02.38 in the 200 butterfly ...  the Vandals will take a break and resume competition on Jan. 19 against New Mexico State.

New Mexico State (3-4)
The New Mexico State swimming and diving team opened the spring semester with a double dual in Tucson, Ariz. ... the Aggies defeated Oregon State, 148-142, but fell to meet host Arizona, 221-76 ... the Aggies began the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-medley relay with junior Tricia Kiss, sophomore Jessica Legge, freshman Dorottya Lennert and senior Alex Fenton ... junior diver Jaymee Porter led the Aggies with a fifth-place finish on the 3-meter springboard and sixth-place finish on the 1-meter ... in the distance freestyle events, freshman Emily Nightingale earned sixth in the 1,000 free, and senior Haley Gansneder was ninth in the 500 free.

North Dakota (4-6-1)
The University of North Dakota women's swimming and diving team dropped a pair of decisions and garnered a tie in the third head-to-head result in the Florida Gulf Coast quad meet completed Saturday ... UND tied Georgia Southern 149.50-149.50 and lost match-ups with Liberty (158-135) and the host Eagles (236-63) ... Veronica Medon won the 100 backstroke, touching in 58.24 ... Medon later grabbed second place in the 200 backstroke with a 2:04.62, just .05 behind the winner ... Caitlin Quon earned a fourth place with a 2:12.18 showing in the 200 IM ... in the diving events, Rachael Waldbillig took second off both the 1- and 3-meter boards ... North Dakota will face Seattle, Wyoming and host Air Force on, Jan. 18-19.  

Northern Arizona (4-4)
NAU swimming & diving team came up just one point short against Oregon State in a 147-146 loss and fell to No. 6 Arizona 221-76 in a challenging double-dual against PAC-12 competition ... the Lumberjack effort was led in the pool by freshman Ellie Morrissey who won two events over Oregon State ... swimming the event for the first time as a collegiate athlete, Morrissey finished fifth overall in the 200 freestyle in 1:56.39 seconds to finish ahead of the top OSU swimmer ... She followed with a time of 52.99 in the 100 free to again earn a win over the Beavers ... On the diving boards the Lumberjacks were led by senior Kristy Ardavanis, who placed second on 1-meter with a score of 262.05 to finish ahead of two Arizona divers, she third in the 3-meter. 

Northern Colorado (0-5)
The Bears dropped both of Friday's duals, losing to CSU Bakersfield 167-132 and falling to San Jose State 187-107 ... juniors Courtney Van Oost and Gina Riggle each won one event and had a second-place finish ... senior diver Sara Moldenhauer finished in the top three on both boards ... Van Oost was victorious in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall first in 2:07.02 ... Riggle won the 200 breaststroke with her time of 2:25.01 ... Moldenhauer, a two-time WAC Diver of the Week, placed second on the one-meter and third on the three-meter boards after scoring 240.45 and 227.60, respectively ... the Bears host their final dual meet of the year on Jan. 26, welcoming New Mexico to the Butler-Hancock pool. 

San Jose State (6-1)
The #23-nationally ranked San Jose State University women's swimming and diving team completed its four-team, three-days of competition with a 183-109 dual-meet win over UC San Diego and improved its record to 6-1 ...  on Friday SJSU defeated Northern Colorado, 187-107, and host CSU Bakersfield, 178- 112 ... they then traveled to USD for the University of San Diego Relay Invitational ... the Spartans won 245-219 ... the Spartan divers travel to Los Angeles, Calif., January 11 through January 13 to compete in the Bruin Diving Invitational ... the swimming team is back in action, January 19, at Nevada, in a dual meet.

Seattle U (0-4)
The Seattle University women's swim team concluded the fall portion of its schedule as the 64th annual Husky Invitational ... Kevlyn Richards finished in 14th place in the morning preliminaries of the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.59 ... Dilynn D'Agostino finished in 21st place in 2:23.76 ... Richards was the top Redhawk in the 100 freestyle preliminaries, finishing in a tie for 111th place with a time of 54.91 seconds ... the Seattle University women's swim team will next compete against Whitworth University Saturday, Jan. 12, starting at 1 p.m. at the Connolly Center Pool.   

Athletes of the Week

San Jose State's Marisa DeWames and Amy Kilby have been named the Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Dec. 31- Jan. 6.

DeWames, a senior from Thousand Oaks, Calif. (Westlake H.S.), finished first in the 100 freestyle in the Spartans' dual meet against CSU Bakersfield and Northern Colorado. She was on three winning relay teams at the University of San Diego Relay Invitational. DeWames then continued the weekend, setting two individual pool records in SJSU's 183-109 victory at UC San Diego. Her 200 freestyle (1:50.69) and the 100 freestyle (51.49) became the fastest recorded at UCSD's Canyonview Pool. DeWames  anchored the 200 freestyle relay team that set a new pool record with a time of 1:39.49. 

Kilby, a senior from Oklahoma City, Okla. (Putnam City North H.S.), swept the weekend boards in the Spartans' diving competitions. She recorded two first-place finishes in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 268.50 and 289.40, respectively in the wins against CSU Bakersfield and Northern Colorado. Kilby went repeated in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving against UC San Diego on Sunday scoring 261.41 and 282.15, respectively.

Other swimmers nominated: CSU Bakersfield freshman Michaela Paige, Northern Arizona freshman Ellie Morrissey, Northern Colorado junior Courtney Van Oost and New Mexico State senior Alex Fenton.
Other divers nominated: Northern Arizona senior Kristy Ardavanis, Northern Colorado junior Sara Moldenhauer and New Mexico State junior Jaymee Porter.
