Air Force freshman Ryan Ward scored two first-half goals but UMKC notched a pair of goals in the second half as the teams played to 2-2 men's soccer draw Friday night at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The game was Air Force's first Western Athletic Conference game of the season since its game vs. Grand Canyon last weekend was postponed due to the government shutdown.

Ward opened the scoring in the 27th minute with the first goal of his career. The play started with a corner kick from junior Scott McGillivray that was headed by senior Caleb Downey right to Ward, who was standing at the top of the box and fired a rocket past UMKC keeper Chris McGaughey. Ward just missed scoring again less than two minutes later when he took a crossing pass and clanged a shot off the crossbar. He redeemed himself, however, in the 31st minute when he took a pass from junior Zachary Modly and placed a shot on the ground from 10 yards out past McGaughey. Ward is the first Falcon to score twice in a game since Ben Chavez had two goals vs. Denver on Nov. 4, 2011.

Seattle University men’s soccer (3-8-1, 2-0-0 WAC) took Western Athletic foe UNLV (3-7-0, 1-1-0 WAC) into double overtime, defeating the Rebels, 2-1, on Jonathan Massimino’s (San Ramon, Calif.) first career goal.

“I’m thrilled to get a win in overtime,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “We’ve gone into overtime five times, in almost half our games this season – two wins, two losses, and a tie. But the last two here have been wins, so I’m pleased. We’re a young team trying to find our way. Their goalkeeper made a fantastic save a minute before Jonathan scored. What we said to them was ‘Let’s make sure the last pass has quality’. Miguel got his composure and Jonathan did the rest. The guys executed tonight and I’m really happy for them. It’s great to start the league schedule 2-0 and UNLV battled. Ian Hines-Ike also scored a great goal, I was so happy to see him put one in the back of the net.”

Senior Kristopher Tyrpak scored twice – the eventual game winner coming with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation – as the HBU men’s soccer team ran their winning streak to six with a 2-1 victory at Grand Canyon Friday evening.

The Huskies drew first blood, as Tyrpak scored his first goal of the season, coming at the six minute-mark. His shot deflected off a defender and beat GCU netminder Joshua Zehring.
