WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

Bakersfield Roadrunners (3-10-1, 2-4-1 WAC)
Bakersfield went 1-1-0 last week ... the ‘Runners defeated New Mexico State 2-1 in double overtime before falling 3-0 to Kansas City ... Hedda Regefalk scored the game-winning goal with 1:56 to go in the second overtime as Bakersfield defeated the Aggies on Friday in Bakersfield ... Regefalk also had an assist in the match ... freshman goalie Megan Vina got the win for the ‘Runners ... Vina entered the match at the start of overtime when starting goalie Tori Ornela went out with an elbow injury ... Vina made four saves, three in the second overtime for the Roadrunners ... Bakersfield gave up an own goal for the second time in the past five games in the 3-0 loss to Kansas City Oct. 13 ... Ornela is now sixth in school history in career saves with 121 ... Bakersfield travels to play Idaho on Friday and Seattle U on Sunday.

Grand Canyon Antelopes (3-10-1, 2-5-1 WAC)
The Antelopes split their weekend home series, falling 5-0 to Seattle U on Friday and winning 2-0 over Idaho on Sunday ... it was the second shutout victory for GCU this season, as they defeated Colorado State 1-0 on Sept. 6 ... Cassie Beckwith recorded her third goal of the season, tied for the team lead, and her second game-winner, which leads the squad ... Chelsea Santos picked up her first score of the season to give GCU the 2-0 advantage in the second half of their game versus Idaho ... GCU stays home for another pair of games this coming weekend, a 7 p.m. matchup against New Mexico State on Friday and a 2 p.m. contest against UMKC on Sunday.

Idaho Vandals (3-10-0, 3-3-0 WAC)
The start to the second half of the WAC schedule did not bring kind results to the Idaho Vandals on Sunday ... Grand Canyon was able to fend off the Vandals late offensive push to gain its second win of the season, 2-0 ... freshmen Alyssa Pease and Kaysha Darcy both recorded two shots on the day and starting keeper Marina Siegl made two saves in the losing effort ... Idaho got its best scoring chances late in the game as the team had opportunities in the 70th minute, 85th minute and 86th minute ... in the final attempt to get on the board Pease forced GCU keeper Catherine Lena to make the last of her three saves on the day in the 87th minute ... Idaho will return home to take on CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Oct. 18 ... he Vandals will welcome Utah Valley to Guy Wicks Field on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Kansas City Kangaroos (7-7-1, 4-3-0 WAC)
Kansas City went 1-1-0 last week ... the team dropped a 2-0 decision at Utah Valley before shutting out Bakersfield 3-0 on the road ... Taylor Bare scored two goals in a 3-0 victory over Bakersfield on Sunday to extend her season total to a WAC-leading 10 goals ... in the process, Bare, who already owns the program career record (27), set a new single-season goals record, as well ... she has scored five times in the last three games ... sophomore Nina Tzianos notched her third shutout of the season in the victory over Bakersfield ... the St. Louis-native also made eight stops in a losing effort at Utah Valley on Friday ... this week, Kansas City will compete in one match--a Sunday trip to Phoenix to face Grand Canyon.

New Mexico State Aggies (4-9-2, 1-5-1 WAC)
New Mexico State went 0-1-1 last week ... the Aggies dropped a 2-1 double overtime decision at Bakersfield before tying Utah Valley 2-2 in another double-overtime contest ... Aggie junior forward Jannae Cambra scored each of the Aggies three goals over the weekend with five shots on goal ... she finished the weekend with an outstanding nine shots and helped the Aggies make a comeback to tie against Utah Valley with two goals in the second half after trailing by two at the half ... Cambra earned WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for her performance ... this week, New Mexico State travels to play Grand Canyon on Friday.

Seattle U Redhawks (9-2-2, 6-0-0 WAC)
Seattle U went 1-0-0 last week, defeating Grand Canyon 5-0 in Phoenix on Friday ... Stephanie Verdoia recorded her second two-goal game of the season, also achieving the feat on Sept. 29 vs. New Mexico State ... Verdoia extended her scoring streak to six games ... Mary Hill anchored the Seattle U midfield/backline that has now recorded six straight shutouts ... Hill also ssisted Verdoia’s second goal of the match for her third assist of the season ... Seattle U has now recorded 22 straight unanswered goals since the first half of the match vs. Grand Canyon on Sept. 20 ... the team is on a seven-game winning streak and a six-game shutout streak ... SU returns home this weekend with a five-game home winning streak ... the team faces Utah Valley on Friday and Bakersfield on Sunday.

Utah Valley Wolverines (6-7-1, 4-2-1 WAC)
Utah Valley completed its season-long four-game homestand last weekend, defeating Kansas City 2-0 and drawing with NM State, 2-2 ... senior forward Haley Curtis tallied five points on the weekend, scoring a goal and distributing three assists ... sophomore forward Kali Stubbs scored both Utah Valley goals against NM State, tallying twice in a three-minute span late in the first half ... the Wolverines will play four of their final five matches on the road with its lone remaining home contest scheduled for Oct. 25 against Grand Canyon ... this week, UVU travels to Seattle U on Friday and Idaho on Sunday ... Utah Valley fell to both Idaho, 1-0, and SU, 2-0, in the season’s first meetings in Orem ... UVU is 0-5-0 all-time against SU and 3-4-0 against Idaho in 2012, the Wolverines made a similar non-conference trip to Moscow and SU, going 0-2 on the trip.

WAC NOTES

WAC SOCCER PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Offensive: Jannae Cambra, Jr., F, New Mexico State

Cambra, a junior forward from Morgan Hill, Calif. (Sobrato HS), scored each of the Aggies’ three goals over the weekend with five shots on goal. She helped NM State comeback from a 2-0 deficit at Utah Valley, scoring two goals to secure a 2-2 tie. She also scored NM State’s lone goal in a 2-1 double-overtime loss at Bakersfield earlier in the week. Over her two matches, Cambra recorded three goals, five shots on goal and six points.

Other offensive nominees included: Grand Canyon sophomore forward Cassie Beckwith … Kansas City senior forward Taylor Bare … Seattle U junior forward Stephanie Verdoia … Utah Valley sophomore forward Kali Stubbs.

Defensive: Mary Hill, Sr., MF, Seattle U

Hill, a senior midfielder from Mercer Island, Wash. (Mercer Island HS), anchored the Seattle U backline that has now recorded six straight shutouts. She helped the SU backline limit Grand Canyon to only one shot on goal in a 5-0 shutout road victory. The SU defense held GCU to only one shot in the first half and six in the second. Hill and the Seattle U defense did not allow Grand Canyon a corner kick in the match. Hill also recorded an assist in the match, her third of the season.

Other defensive nominees included: Grand Canyon senior goalkeeper Cat Lena … Kansas City sophomore goalkeeper Nina Tzianos.

SEATTLE U CONTINUES TO TAKE HOLD OF FIRST PLACE IN THE WAC STANDINGS WITH PERFECT 6-0-0 RECORD
Seattle U picked up a 5-0 shutout victory over Grand Canyon on the road last week to up its conference record to a perfect 6-0-0 on the season. The six wins gives the Redhawks 18 points in the league standings, giving the team a five-point lead on second place Utah Valley (13). UVU went 1-0-1 last week with a 2-0 shutout over Kansas City and a 2-2 double overtime tie against New Mexico State. Kansas City sits in third with a 4-3-1 overall record with 12 points. Idaho sits in fourth with nine points and a 3-3-0 record. Bakersfield and Grand Canyon are tied for fifth with seven points, while New Mexico State ranks seventh with four points. The top four teams at the end of the season will qualify for the WAC Tournament in Las Cruces, Nov. 8 and 10.

SEATTLE U MOVES UP TO 8TH IN LATEST NSCAA/CONTINENTAL TIRE  WEST REGIONAL POLL
After picking up a 5-0 shutout road victory last week to improve its overall record to 9-2-2, Seattle U moved up two spots to No. 8 in this week’s NSCAA/Continental Tire West Region Top-10 Poll. The Redhawks have won seven straight matches dating back to a Sept. 20 win over Grand Canyon.

2013 WAC TOURNAMENT HEADS TO LAS CRUCES
The 2013 Western Athletic Conference Soccer Tournament will be held at the Soccer Complex on the campus of New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Mew Mexico State ticket office at (575) 646-1420. More information can be found at www.wacsports.com.

2013 NCAA COLLEGE CUP
The 33rd Annual Women’s College Cup will be held Dec. 6 and 8, 2013, in Cary, N.C., at the WakeMed Soccer Park. Last season, the WAC had two teams compete in postseason play with Utah State falling in the first round to BYU and Denver making a run to the Sweet 16. CHICAGO STATE AND UTPA TO JOIN WAC WOMEN’S SOCCER LEAGUE IN 2014
Chicago State and UTPA have each hired head coaches to manage their respective women’s soccer programs. Tony Tommasi has been named the first women’s soccer head coach in Chicago State University history. Tommasi heads to Chicago State with 12 years of collegiate head coaching experience along with two years as an assistant at NCAA Division I Mississippi State. UTPA announced that Glad Bugariu, who had been the head coach at South Carolina State (SCSU) for the last five seasons, is the first Broncs women’s soccer head coach. Both teams are set to begin thier inaugural seasons of women’s soccer as members of the WAC in 2014.
