DENVER — Seattle U’s Miguel Gonzalez and Kansas City’s Michael Oakley have been named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for October 14-20.
Gonzalez, a senior forward from Yelm, Wash. (Peninsula College), scored three goals in two road wins for the Redhawks last week. Gonzalez had five shots and scored twice in Seattle U’s 2-0 victory at UNLV on Friday. Two days later with the scored tied 1-1 at Bakersfield, Gonzalez hit the game-winner in the 82nd minute to give Seattle U the weekend sweep. Gonzalez leads the WAC in goals (12) and points (25) on the season.
Oakley, a junior defender from Lee’s Summit, Mo. (Lee’s Summit North HS), helped the Kangaroos to a 2-0 record, allowing just one goal in the two matches combined. After beating Air Force, 2-1, on Friday, Kansas City shut out Grand Canyon, 2-0, on Sunday. In the shutout, Oakley led a defense that held the ‘Lopes to just six shots, none on goal. Oakley also added three shots over the weekend, two of which were on frame.
Other offensive nominees included: sophomore forward Alberto Sanchez, Grand Canyon; freshman forward Tobenna Uzo, Houston Baptist; and junior forward Tato Chiaparro, Kansas City.
Defensive nominees included: junior goalkeeper Joshua Zehring, Grand Canyon; and senior goalkeeper Jake Feener, Seattle U.
