DENVER — Seattle U’s Jonathan Massimino and Houston Baptist’s Kevin Suarez have been named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for October 28-November 3.
Massimino, a freshman from San Ramon, Calif. (California HS), scored two goals, including the game-winner at Kansas City on Sunday afternoon. After the Redhawks trailed 3-1, Massimino scored in the 87th minute to break a 3-3 tie. Earlier on Friday, he scored Seattle U’s only goal in a 1-1 draw at Houston Baptist. For the week, he took five shots, including three on goal.
Suarez, a junior goalkeeper from Houston, Texas (Cypress Falls) helped the Huskies tie the WAC’s only unbeaten team, Seattle U, 1-1, and then earned his second shutout on the season in a 5-0 blanking of San Jose State on Sunday. Against Seattle U, the biggest of his three saves came in the 97th minute, when the WAC’s leading scorer, Miguel Gonzalez, was awarded a penalty kick. Suarez made a diving stop to keep the match alive. Suarez made five saves in the two matches and had a 0.45 goals-against average and an .833 save percentage.
Other offensive nominees included: junior midfielder Joe Masumiya, Bakersfield; freshman midfielder Daniel Wall, Grand Canyon; and freshman forward Stefan Lamanna, Houston Baptist.
Defensive nominees included: freshman goalkeeper Jake Schenk, Air Force; junior goalkeeper Joshua Zehring, Grand Canyon; sophomore defender Bradley Kamdem; and senior goalkeeper Jake Feener, Seattle U.
