Martin Ayala and Denver's
Emma Isberg have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of Feb. 18-24.
Ayala, a senior from Quito, Ecuador (Sek Los Valles), Ayala collected three victories last week, including two at the No. 1 doubles spot with teammate Diogo Casa. Ayala went 1-1 in singles play last week at the No. 1 singles spot. He took No. 98 Ben Davis of No. 47 Middle Tennessee to three sets, dropping the match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. On Saturday Ayala defeated Lipscomb's Oliver Strecker in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Ayala and Casa improved to 8-0 on the season in No. 1 doubles with a pair of 8-4 victories.
A senior from Tyreso, Sweden, Isberg played in the No. 3 singles position against the No. 75 Pioneer's 6-1 win over New Mexico. Isberg swept New Mexico's Kristin Eggleston, 6-1, 6-1. Isberg partnered with sophomore Mandy van den Eerenbeemt to defeat New Mexico's No. 2 doubles team of Eggleston and Nikolina Grbac, 9-8(4).
