DENVER – New Mexico State’s Daniel Fernandez and Idaho’s Victoria Lozano have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 8-14.
Fernandez, a freshman from Aguascalientes, Mexico (Tec de Monterrey), extended his win streak to six matches and moved to a perfect 4-0 n WAC play at the on the No. 2 court after a 2-0 weekend record. He defeated both his WAC opponents in straight sets and battled a tough first set against Zach Kosanke of Seattle U (75, 6-3) before coming up with the two-game win. He defeated Utah State’s Fredrik Peterson, 6-1, 6-4. Fernandez split his weekend in doubles play with partner Paul Denele at the No. 3 spot. The Aggie duo knocked off Flavio Malagutti and Kyle Rapp of Seattle U, 8-5 on Friday, but fell in a close 8-6 decision to the pair from Utah State for just his third loss in doubles play this season. Fernandez is 12-3 at the No. 3 spot in double play this season and improves to 15-4 in singles play and 11-2 at the second position.
A sophomore from Guadalajara, Mexico, Lozano went 2-0 in doubles on the week, playing at the No. 1 spot in every match as Idaho went 2-1 in three WAC matches. Lozano’s only loss of the week came to No. 47 Klaudia Boczova of No. 66 San Jose State. She put together a winning performance in Idaho’s 6-1 triumph over Seattle U. Lozano scored a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lindsey Newman and teamed with Almu Sanz to win 8-0 in No. 1 doubles. Lozano also had a straight-set win at No. 1 singles agianst Texas State’s Jessica Kahts and won 9-7 at No. 1 doubles, helping the Vandals to a 4-3 win over the Bobcats.
