WAC NOTES

DENVER (8-11, 4-0)
The University of Denver men’s tennis team defeated UT-San Antonio 4-3 on Sunday ... the win improves the Pioneers to 8-11 overall and 4-0 in WAC play ... the Pioneers fell to the Roadrunners in two of three doubles matches to trail 1-0 going into singles play ... Alex Clinkenbeard defeated UT-San Antonio’s Eric Buchalter 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot ... ITA-ranked No. 50 Enej Bonin beat Martin Ayala 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles ... Jens Vorkefeld claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Diogo Casa in No. 2 singles ... the Pioneers next match is Friday, April 19 against Utah State.

IDAHO (20-5, 4-0)
The No. 72 Idaho men’s tennis team fell to No. 39 BYU 4-3 in Spokane, Wash., on Friday night ... BYU got the early advantage by winning the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 ... Idaho got wins at No. 2, 3 and 5 singles from Abid Akbar, Jose Bendeck, and Cesar Torres, but it wasn’t enough to top the Cougars ... the Vandals fall to 20-5 on the season with the loss ... Idaho will host UTSA and Denver in WAC matches on April 19 and 21, and also face CC of Spokane on April 21 ...  the WAC championships are April 26-28 in Denver.

NEW MEXICO STATE (13-8, 3-2)
The New Mexico State men’s tennis team was able to bounce back after dropping the doubles point to win 4-2 over Utah State on Saturday, April 13 ... Luis Ramirez and Marc Westgate were able to win at the No. 1 spot, 8-6, the next two Aggie pairs fell to the northern Aggies ... NM State did not hesitate to come back in singles play with four wins on the six courts to pick up the final win of the regular season ... Ramirez won at the top singles position in three sets ... Daniel Fernandez boosted his winning streak to six singles matches at the No. 2 spot ... next on the schedule for NM State is the WAC Championships in Denver, Colo., April 25-28.

SEATTLE U (1-18, 0-3)
Will Topp has the best singles record on the team, going 4-6 in individual competition ... out of players who have played more than 10 matches, Flavio Malagutti has a record of 4-7 while Zach Kosanke is 7-14 ... in doubles play, Topp has the best record, going 3-5 ... out of players who have played more than 10 matches, Jason Bediones has a 6-11 record with 5 of those wins coming with Kevin Lynch ... the Redhawks will end their season with two home matches: hosting Pacific Lutheran on Tuesday, April 16, then playing host to UTSA in their final conference match in their inaugural WAC season.

UT ARLINGTON (7-13, 1-5)
The UT Arlington men’s tennis team lost its final regular season match of the season against Western Athletic Conference opponent Utah State 4-3 ... UTA dropped to 7-13 overall and 1-5 in conference play ... the Aggies stepped up early, winning the doubles point at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions ... Yauheni Yakauleu defeated USU’s Fredrik Peterson at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-2 ... Carlos Arbiza and Marek Pesicka also won their singles competition at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively ... the Mavericks have several days off before heading to Denver, Colo. for the WAC tournament, which begins April 25.

UTSA (11-10, 2-1)
UTSA posted an 0-1 record last week ... the Roadrunners had a 2-0 lead over visiting Denver, but the Pioneers rallied for a 4-3 victory last Sunday ... in the loss, the No. 1 doubles paring of Martin Ayala and Diogo Casa won their third consecutive match and improved to 15-3 on the year and 2-1 in WAC action.

UTAH STATE (7-12, 2-3)
In the final home match of the season, the Utah State men’s tennis team came away with a 4-3 win against Western Athletic Conference rival UT Arlington ... the team got off to a good start winning the doubles point ... Sven Poslusny and sophomore Matt Sweet defeated Soren Goritzka and Marek Pesika, 8-2, in the first position, while sophomore Marcus Fritz and junior Andrew Whiting took down Yauheni Yakauleu and Carlos Arbiza, 9-8, at the second position ... after losing the first set, Whiting defeated Gomez (1-6, 6-2, 6-3) to secure the win for the team ... at the No. 1 spot, Poslusny beat Goritzka in straight sets (6-1, 6-1), while Peterson fell to Yakauleu (6-2, 6-2) in the No. 2 position ... with the win, the Aggies head into their final road trip of the season with an overall record of 7-12 with a 2-3 league record ... the team will play at Air Force on Thursday, April 18 before closing the regular season in a WAC match at Denver on Friday, April 19.
