LOS ANGELES, Calif. – San Jose State University’s women’s tennis season came to a close on Saturday at Marks Stadium on the campus of Southern California. The No. 63 Spartans fell to No. 32 UC Irvine, 4-2.
San Jose State’s season came down to the third set on the No. 5 court. UC Irvine’s Ali Facey and SJSU’s Julianna Bacelar split the first two sets of the match, with the Anteaters holding onto a 3-2 match lead. Bacelar took the first set (4-6), then Facey came back in the second with a 7-6(0) win in the second set. Facey fought off Bacelar’s two match points in the second set and then needed six of her own to close out the Spartans, 7-5.
SJSU started the match off fast, claiming the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and 3 courts.
UC Irvine evened the match at one point apiece with Sarah Gong’s (6-2, 6-2) win over Erica Medlin in the No. 4 court. Franziska Goettsching’s win in the No. 3 court pushed UC Irvine to a 2-1 match lead. She defeated Chau Truong in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
The Anteaters’ Marivick Mamiit spread the lead to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sabastiani Leon Chao.
The Spartans finished the season with a 19-6 record, making their first NCAA Tournament.
