DENVER - The Western Athletic Conference today announced the winner of its annual Commissioner's Cup with this year's honor going to UTSA with 90.00 points. The Roadrunners ended the year with two WAC championships, winning the postseason titles in men's indoor track & field and baseball. Idaho was second with 86.50 points while Utah State finished in third with 82.00.
The WAC awards its Commissioner's Cup to the school that performs the best in each of the conference's 19 men's and women's championships. Points are awarded in order of finish, equal to the number of teams that participate in each sport, and are averaged between a team's regular-season finish (if applicable) and its WAC championship finish. Teams that do not qualify for a postseason tournament due to a smaller field receive points equal to their regular-season finish. Ties are not broken but instead are averaged between the tied teams. Affiliate members are not eligible for the Commissioner's Cup, but their standings are still used for determining overall points.
Idaho finished in second place with 86.50 points. The Vandals won two WAC championships, winning postseason championships in women's cross country and women's basketball.
Utah State rounded out the top three with 82.00 points. The Aggies finished with both regular season and postseason titles in women's soccer. They also added regular season championships in volleyball and football.
New Mexico State finished in fourth place with 80.75 points, with postseason titles in volleyball, men's basketball and men's golf. Texas State finished fifth with 79.50 points and UT Arlington followed in sixth with 76.25 points.
For the third season in a row all member institutions claimed either a regular season or postseason championship in at least one sport.
