WAC NOTES
UTSA SELECTED TO PLAY IN NCAA CORVALLIS REGIONAL
UTSA learned Monday that it will be the No. 4 seed at this weekend’s NCAA Tournament Corvallis Regional, which will be played from Friday-Sunday at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Ore. The Roadrunners, who earned the WAC’s automatic bid with Sunday’s 11-4 victory against Dallas Baptist, will face No. 3 national seed Oregon State (45-10) on Friday and the game will be broadcast by ESPN3. The Beavers finished 24-6 in Pac-12 Conference play to win the league by two games over intrastate rival Oregon. This will be the fourth time (2005-06 & 2011) that Oregon State has hosted a regional and the two-time National Champions (2006-07) are a perfect 9-0 when playing as the host school. Texas A&M (32-27) earned the regional’s No. 2 seed and it will face third-seeded UC Santa Barbara (34-23) on Friday. The Aggies went 13-16 to finish sixth in the Southeastern Conference’s West Division, while the Gauchos won their final six series of the season to finish second in the Big West Conference (17-10).
UTSA WINS WAC TOURNAMENT TITLE
No. 4 seed UTSA rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to seventh-seeded Dallas Baptist and the Roadrunners completed their perfect run to a Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship by a score of 11-4 at QuikTrip Park on May 26. After the Patriots (30-30) scored two runs in the second, UTSA (35-23) needed three innings to tie things up, but it was all Birds from the fifth inning on. The Roadrunners went on to plate two more runs in both the sixth and seventh and they put the game out of reach with a five-run eighth. DBU scored a pair of runs in the ninth off Logan Onda, but, by then, it was too little, too late. The Roadrunners, who now have won their last seven games (10 of 11 overall), went a perfect 4-0 this week en route to their fifth conference title in program history. UTSA previously won four crowns as a member of the Southland Conference (2007-08 Regular Season/1994 & 2005 Tournament).
