DENVER - Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Jeff Hurd today announced the hiring of Ray Garvin, a 2009 graduate of Texas Southern University and a 2012 graduate of its Thurgood Marshall School of Law, as the WAC’s compliance and championships intern for the 2013-14 academic year.
Earlier this summer, Garvin received his LL.M in International and Comparative Sports Law from St. John’s (N.Y.) School of Law. While there, he served as an athletics compliance intern and athletics legal intern. In those capacities, Garvin assisted with the Student-Athlete Opportunity Fund, compiled data to compute the Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR), maintained the St. John's compliance Twitter account, reviewed athletic facility agreements, and assisted in disciplinary action regarding infractions, among other duties.
Prior to his time at St. John's, Garvin worked with several different law groups and with the Harris County District Attorney's office in Houston. He also served as an athletics compliance intern at Houston Baptist University.
A native of Las Vegas, Garvin is a member of the Sports Lawyer Association, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Psi Chi National Honors Society.
