BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Erica Shelton (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., UC Santa Barbara) recorded a hat trick to lead Bakersfield past Southern Utah 4-1 in the 2013 women's soccer opener Friday night.
"Erica does all the extra little things at training so it was nice to see her rewarded for her efforts," said Bakersfield head coach Melissa Phillips. "We know she’s going to be a leader and its nice to see her produce as well."

LAS CRUCES, N.M.- (NMSU Media Relations) The New Mexico State soccer team opened the 2013 season at home with a 3-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha.
The Aggies posted a 12-6 advantage in shots with the veterans leading the way. Junior forward Layla Todd, junior midfielder Bree Luhrsen and senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol each scored a goal in the season opener.

Kansas City, Mo. - (UMKC Media Relations) The Kansas City women's soccer team got off on the right foot on Friday, defeating the visiting SIUE Cougars 1-0 on the strength of an Emily Herndon goal and a Nina Tzianos shutout.
The victory was the first season opening win in school history for the 'Roos (1-0).
"I was just really proud of the girls, in our first game, to come out and get a victory," said head coach Chris Cissell. "Starting off the season 1-0 is something we've been talking about throughout the preseason."

SEATTLE, Wash. – (SU Media Relations) After a relatively even first half, Washington State struck quickly in the second half, and the Cougars held on to defeat the Seattle University Redhawks in women’s collegiate soccer action, 3-1, Friday afternoon at Championship Field.
After the two teams continually exchanged possession for the first 20 minutes, Seattle U received the first significant scoring chance, as Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) dribbled the ball into the box before being taken down by a Washington State defender, forcing a penalty kick opportunity. Julia Besagno (Maple Valley, Wash.) converted on the penalty kick, giving the Redhawks a 1-0 lead.

MORAGA, CA - (GCU Media Relations) The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team today opened a new era for the Antelopes, competing in the first regular season NCAA Division I game for the school as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. The 'Lopes dropped a 3-0 decision to Saint Mary's (CA), a member of the West Coast Conference, at Saint Mary's Stadium in Moraga, Calif.
The Gaels outshot GCU 20-5, putting six of their shots on goal. The 'Lopes had three shots on goal, with one each from Jessica Fitzgerald, Cassie Beckwith, and Jessica Valadez.

OGDEN, Utah—(UI Media Relations) The University of Idaho could not contain the spark of the Weber State offense, dropping its first game of the season 3-0 this afternoon. The game was scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. PT start but the teams were forced to clear the field for 30 minutes due to a lightning delay.
“Unfortunately for us I think lightning struck more than once today,” head coach Pete Showler said. “We knew we would take some lumps and bumps early on, playing some tough games and we found that out today. We will learn from our mistakes and move on to next game. We just need to take care of what we can control.”

EL PASO, Texas --(UVU Media Relations) Utah Valley University dropped the 2013 season opener Friday at UTEP by a final score of 3-2, conceding the decisive goal in a physical, back-and-forth contest with only five minutes remaining in regulation.
The Miners' Angela Cutaia delivered the decisive blow in the 85th minute when, all alone in the box, she faked out UVU goalkeeper Lauren Sack and finished into the wide-open net. Taylor Kidd assisted on the play with a slicing through ball that freed Cutaia into space.
