DENVER - The Western Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee met August 2-4 in Denver for its annual meeting in downtown Denver. Two members from each WAC institution attended the meetings to share and brainstorm ideas regarding their campus SAAC, WAC SAAC and National SAAC.

The student-athletes were joined by several members of the WAC staff as they discussed and gave feedback regarding pertinent NCAA legislation, determined this year’s community service campaign, elected the 2013-14 officers and focused on ways to further engage student-athletes in SAAC programs. The attendees also filmed the 2013-14 WAC PSA and other videos that will be featured on wacsports.com and WAC social media.

Dalton Kelley, a senior wrestler from Bakersfield, was voted 2013-14 WAC SAAC President at the meeting by his peers.

“I feel honored to have been elected to serve as the 2013-14 WAC SAAC President by my colleagues and given the privilege to lead such an ambitious group of student athletes on our mission,” said Kelley. “I am excited about what we are going to accomplish this year due to the energy and expertise brought by each member of our committee.”

Other officers elected were; Vice Presidents: Reagan Quigley (Idaho, soccer) and Lindsey Bryant (Utah Valley, track and field), Secretary: Jenna Pearson (Grand Canyon, basketball), Social Media: Christy Barela (New Mexico State, cross country/track and field), Event Coordinators: Lauren Kaufman (Bakersfield, swimming) and Horlexus Willus (New Mexico State, track and field).

The committee spent the afternoon of Aug. 2 at the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Denver interacting with the children in attendance, which helped form the campaign for the upcoming year, “WAC SAAC Gives Back.”

“WAC SAAC’s main initiative this year is to become prominent role models in our communities by helping shape the youth of the west,” said Kelley. “This is reflected in the theme of our community service campaign, which is titled ‘WAC SAAC Gives Back.’  Our goal is to better our communities by being involved with schools and youth organization; promoting education, health and fitness, and providing opportunities to disadvantaged and disabled children.”

“We will also be having a toy drive in order to purchase toys for kids, and youth serving organizations in our communities.  The toy drive will be a competition between each WAC institution’s SAAC group to see who can raise the most money for toys.  The winner will be announced at the WAC Basketball Tournament in March.”
