Syracuse 3, Chicago State 0
Chicago State volleyball dropped a 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-21) non-conference match at Atlantic Coast Conference member Syracuse on Saturday (Sept. 14) morning. It was the Cougars' final match at the Candlewood Suites Challenge. Senior Paula Sioto led the Cougars in kills for the third consecutive match with nine, while Valeria Desiderio added eight kills. Senior Rachel Levitt recorded six kills and freshman Chinwendu Ngwadom notched three kills.
Idaho 3, North Texas 2
It took a complete team effort for the Idaho volleyball team to grind out a 3-2 victory over North Texas to win the Bronco Volleyball Classic with a perfect 3-0 record. Idaho (6-4) hitters Jessica Hastriter and Katelyn Peterson each had career-highs in kills, as Hastriter finished with 23 and a career-high .538 hitting percentage while Peterson added 20 kills and hit .333. Setter Meredith Coba had a career-high 67 assists, topping her previous best of 50, leading Idaho to a .389 hitting percentage in the match.
Grand Canyon 3, Manhattan 0
Grand Canyon opened play Saturday with a 3-0 win over Manhattan. Against the Jaspers, GCU won by set scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-19. Trailing 13-10 in the first set against Manhattan, GCU went on a 9-1 run to take a comfortable 19-14 lead. Megan Davis had two of her four service aces – tying her career-high – during the run. GCU took advantage of numerous Manhattan attack errors. Lanie Muys, who had a career-high seven block assists, had two during the rally, one with Shannon Dugan and another with Britta Forsythe. GCU jumped out to a 19-5 lead in the second set and broke away after a 15-15 tie in the third. Dugan finished with 12 kills, seven digs and four block assists. Muys, Forsythe and Kaitlynn Ausmus each had eight kills. Mackenzie Phelps had 15 digs, while Megan Davis added 14. Jessica Posse had 17 assists and eight digs, while Bree Davis added 17 assists.
Grand Canyon 3, Dartmouth 2
Grand Canyon wrapped up play on Saturday with a 3-2 win over Dartmouth, giving the 'Lopes two victories as the team defeated Manhattan earlier in the day.The 'Lopes defeated Dartmouth 17-25, 25-21, 15-25, 25-21, 15-13. GCU had to stave off a Dartmouth comeback in the fifth. The Antelopes led 10-6 before the Big Green tied it at 12. Ausmus had a kill for a 13-12 lead. She also finished the match with a kill. In between, Britta Forsythe and Lanie Muys had a combo block. Dartmouth had its big rally in the third set, scoring 11 of the final 12 points. Ausmus had a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs. Phelps finished with 23 digs.
Texas-Pan American 3, McNeese State 2
Senior Nycole Masaki tied her career-high with 56 assists to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team to their first ever win over McNeese State, a 3-2 victory on Saturday at the Big Daddy's Invitational.The Broncs (9-3) have now won four straight matches including seven of their last eight.
Southern Miss 3, Texas-Pan American 0
The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team had their four-match win streak snapped as they fell to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles 0-3 at the Big Daddy's Invitational on Saturday. The Broncs (9-4) led early in the first set as a kill from Haley Durham gave them the 5-3 lead. A kill by Anjane Janda pushed the Broncs lead to 6-4 but the Golden Eagles (9-2) tied the set at six with a service ace from Shelby Russell. Later in the set, Southern Mississippi took the 19-14 after a kill by Quinci Hayward before taking the set 25-16.
Wake Forest 3, Kansas City 1
The Kansas City volleyball team fell on the final day of the Kangaroo Klassic, 3-1 to Wake Forest in the Championship match at the Swinney Recreation Center. The loss evens the ‘Roos record at 5-5 on the season, while the Demon Deacons improve to 8-1. Sophomore Sydney Crimmins notched her second straight double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs, earning a spot on the all-tournament team, while classmate Taryn Miller joined her on the squad after tallying a team-high 18 digs.
UC Irvine 3, Utah Valley 1
Utah Valley University dropped its first of two Saturday matches at the Wolverine Classic, losing in four sets to UC Irvine (19-25, 21-25, 26-24, 15-25). Macky Treanor led the Wolverines with 12 kills with Kalani Norris adding eight and Katie Fritzler seven. A staunch offensive attack from UC Irvine helped the Anteaters to the four set win. UCI hit .421 for the match overall and had four different players with at least 13 kills including a match-high 21 from Marisa Bubica.
New Mexico State 3, Northern Illinois 1
The New Mexico State volleyball team played with intensity in the final match of the NM State Volleyball Tournament and pulled off a 3-1 win over Northern Illinois, Saturday, Sept. 14 in the Pan American Center. The Aggies dropped the first set, 21-25, but came back and won, 25-14, 25-20, and 25-18, to move to 3-6 on the year. The Aggies got a great defensive performance from redshirt sophomore middle hitter Gwen Murphy, who marked five total blocks (one solo, four assisted), while adding a career-high eight kills on a .353 hitting percentage.
Fresno State 3, Bakersfield 0
The 'Runners were plagued by poor hitting throughout as Bakersfield hit .028 (28-25-109) for the match and were at a negative number in the third and final set. In comparison, the Bulldogs hit .300 for the match, making only nine hitting errors in 100 chances (39-9-100). Danika Youngblood (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Western Nebraska CC) and Kelsee Sawyer (So., Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) each posted six kills for the 'Runners. Fernanda Gonçalves (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) charted 23 assists. Mariah Alvidrez (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) posted 15 digs.
Bakersfield 3, Belmont 0
Set one between the Roadrunners and the Bruins featured 14 ties. With the set knotted up at 18, Bakersfield used a 7-2 spurt to earn the first set victory 25-20. Set two was evenly matched once again. At 21-21, the 'Runners scored the next two points, but Belmont would tie it up at 23. A Molly O'Hagan kill made it 24-23. The Bruins called timeout and tied it up for the 10th time. O'Hagan again broke the tie with a kill at 25-24. CSUB earned the set with a Lisa Bartsch ace for a 26-24 victory.
Long Beach State 3, Seattle U 0
Seattle U dropped a 3-0 (14-24, 13-25, 13-25) decision to Long Beach State Saturday night. Iris Ivanis led the Redhawks at the net with a team-high six kills on 25 total attacks. Kerry Lane fronted SU with 17 assists on the night and tied teammate Lani Beadle with six digs. SU had eight blocks on the night.
Utah 3, Utah Valley 1
Utah Valley wrapped up play on Saturday night with a 3-1 (19-25, 21-25, 29-27, 15-25) loss to in-state rival Utah. Three Wolverines reached double digit kills on the night, led by Kalani Norris' 14. Macky Treanor had 13 kills, while Lauren Stringham added 10. Brookelyn Hall set up the Wolverines on the night with 39 assists. McKenna Tait led the team with 17 digs on the night.
