CHICAGO - (CSU Media Relations) In a record-breaking performance on Tuesday (Sept. 17), the Chicago State women's golf team shot a school record 303 in the second round to win the 13-team Cougar Classic while senior Brooke Melvin (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) won the individual championship after posting a 70. Melvin's 70 set a new school record for a low individual round.
Melvin's total score of 145 (75-70) was one-shot better Cleveland State's Micaela Cronin and two shots better than her teammate sophomore Casey MacNeil (Massey, Ont./Espanola) (147=73-74)
Part of Melvin's success had to do with her play on the Harborside International Golf Course's ten par fours. The senior shot three under during the Cougar Classic on the par fours, the only player in the 78 person field to do so. She and MacNeil had six birdies during the tournament, tied for second most in the field.
For MacNeil, it was her fourth top three consecutive finish this season.
Sophomore Lorelle Weavers (Burlington, Ont./Lester B Pearson)' total score of 157 (76-81) placed her in a tie for 19th place. Freshman Fernanda Valdes' 78 and senior Jessica Peatross (Lansing, Mich./Holt)' 81 today were both improvements from their first round scores. Valdes finished tied for 27th (160=82-78) and Peatross tied for 40th (82-81).
Freshman Tali Letoi improved her score in round two by six shots, posting an 87 for a two-day total of 180. She played as an individual.
Chicago State bested second place Indiana State's 612 by three strokes for the Cougar Classic team title.
The previous school record was a 305 set at the Dayton Fall Invitational last season on Oct. 23. It was the same tournament where the previous individual low round was set, which was a 71 by Weavers. Both marks lasted less than a year.
"All of the credit goes to the team," interim head coach Marty Schiene said. "Brooke and the entire team didn't back down after being the day one leaders. Harborside has been very helpful all semester and the experience we have on the course really helped today."
The Cougars get back on the golf course at the Toledo Rocket Classic in Clinton, Ohio (Oct. 14-15).
