Missouri State 1, Kansas City 0

Springfield, Mo.--(UMKC Media Relations) The Kansas City women’s soccer team fell in heartbreaking fashion on Tuesday, dropping a 1-0 contest to Missouri State after surrendering a Shelby Stewart goal in the game’s 88th minute.

The team’s battled at length in a match that was dominated by the goalkeepers. Sophomore Nina Tzianos faced four shots on goal, stopping the first three to keep the ‘Roos (3-4-1) afloat.

UMKC failed to score, but not for a complete lack of opportunities. Ellie Chadick, Ashley Gann, Kaely Tott and Taylor Bare each put shots on goal, but Bear goalkeepers Evan Stamp and Jessica Perry were up to the task each time.

The game appeared as though it was headed for extra time when Missouri State forward Shelby Stewart struck with just 1:40 remaining in regulation. Molly Huber corralled an entry into the box just as Stewart slipped free in front of the net. Huber found Stewart and Stewart found the back of the net.

The ‘Roos will return home on Friday to face New Mexico State in what will serve as the program’s first Western Athletic Conference match. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
