CHICAGO –(CSU Media Relations) A steal and a pair of three throws in the final seconds by freshman Johnny Griffin (Ford Heights, Ill./Bloom Trail ) sealed the Cougars' 86-81 victory over New Mexico State on Thursday (Jan. 16). The win moves Chicago State to 3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. It's the first time Chicago State has started conference play 3-0 in NCAA Division I program history.
Both teams held leads as large as eight in the first half but when the halftime buzzer sounded the game was tied at 40.
Chicago State built their largest lead of the second half at seven points on a jumper by Pippen with 13:18 remaining to make the s core55-48. New Mexico State responded with 10 straight points to grab a 58-55 lead following a pair of free throws by KC Ross-Miller.

Utah Valley 71, Idaho 66
MOSCOW, Idaho –(UVU Media Relations) Utah Valley University staunchly held off homestanding Idaho to move to 3-0 in the WAC and win its fourth straight, 71-66, on Thursday at the Cowan Spectrum.
Mitch Bruneel hit a key 3-pointer with 2:58 to go, putting the Wolverines (9-7, 3-0) head by five, 68-63, on their way to a tie atop the early-season WAC standings with Chicago State.
After Bruneel’s three, the teams traded free throws before Stephen Madison scored on a layup and later a free-throw to make it a two point game, 68-66, with 26 seconds left.
Holton Hunsaker then sank two key free throws with 15.5 to go and the Wolverines rebounded a missed three on the other end with a Hayes Garrity free throw accounting for the final five-point win.

SEATTLE, Wash.-(CSUB Media Relations) The Bakersfield Roadrunners allowed the defense that cost them two home games in Western Athletic Conference play to hold Seattle University scoreless during two stretches in each half as the ‘Runners won their first WAC game 61-57 Thursday night at Key Arena.
Bakersfield fell behind early 14-4 in the first half with 13:33 to play, then the Roadrunners switched defensive styles and managed to build their own seven-point lead and ending the half on a 23-7 run to lead 27-21 at the half. The ‘Runners rolled off a 16-0 run from the 13:33 mark to the 5:21 mark of the half. Seattle went 12:30 between field goals during that stretch as well.

Texas-Pan American 78, Kansas City 66
KANSAS CITY, Mo. –(UTPA Media Relations) The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team shot a season-high 58 percent from the field to record its first Western Athletic Conference win, 78-66 over the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos on Thursday at Municipal Auditorium, the site of the Broncs' 1963 NAIA Championship.
It is the Broncs' (5-14, 1-3 WAC) first conference win in a conference with an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament since Feb. 5, 1998, an 88-87 Sun Belt Conference home win over Western Kentucky.
It was the Broncs' highest single-game shooting percentage since Feb. 14, 2009, when they shot 68.8 percent in an 86-82 home win over Longwood. The Broncs were consistent, shooting 57.1 percent in the first half and 59.1 percent in the second half.
