DENVER – Texas-Pan American's Shaquille Boga has been named Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 13-19.
Boga, a junior guard from St. Louis, Mo. (McCluer HS), led the Broncs to a pair of WAC road wins over Kansas City and Chicago State last week. In a 78-66 win at Kansas City, Boga scored 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting, plus a then-career-high 7-of-10 from the line, with four rebounds, four assists and three steals. In UTPA's 84-61 win over Chicago State, Boga led the Broncs in scoring for the fifth time this season with a career-high 26 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including a 1-of-3 mark from behind the arc. He also knocked down a career-high 15 free throws on a career-high 18 attempts.
For the week, Boga averaged 22.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game. He shot 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from the field, 40.0 percent (2-of-5) from the three-point line, and 78.6 percent (22-of-28) from the free throw line.
Other nominees included: Bakersfield senior guard Issiah Grayson averaged 17.5 points as CSUB went 1-1 on the road ... Chicago State senior guard/forward Quinton Pippen averaged 21.0 points and 5.5 rebounds over two games ... Idaho junior guard Mike Scott averaged 16.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in two games ... Kansas City freshman guard Martez Harrison averaged 19.0 points and 5.0 assists over a pair of games ... New Mexico State senior forward Renaldo Dixon scored a career-high 33 points at Kansas City ... Utah Valley junior forward Mitch Bruneel averaged 19.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in a pair of WAC road wins.
