DENVER — North Dakota’s Austin Smith and Air Force’s Dominic Vallejo have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for January 13-19.
Smith, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo. (Rampart HS), won both breaststroke events in a triangular meet at Air Force over the weekend. The meet included WAC teams North Dakota, Air Force and Seattle U. On Friday, he won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:06.42 and won the 100 breaststroke the following day with a time of 55.96. Smith also helped the 200 medley relay to a first place finish on Saturday with a time of 1:32.20. North Dakota split the meets both days with wins over Seattle U and losses against Air Force.
Vallejo, a sophomore from Laguna Beach, Calif. (Laguna Hills HS), helped Air Force to a 4-0 mark in head-to-head competition against North Dakota and Seattle U over the weekend. On Friday, Vallejo won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 320.85. He placed second on the 1-meter with 315.10 points. On Saturday, Vallejo won the platform diving with 298.75 points, 41.15 more than the second place finisher.
Other swimmers nominated: Wyoming junor Adam Kalms.
Other divers nominated: North Dakota senior Rick Eberle; and Wyoming senior Derek Campbell.
