TEAM RECAPS
CHICAGO STATE
Chicago State will open the 2014 portion of its schedule on Saturday at Detroit and follow that up on Sunday with a trip to Western Michigan ... the Chicago State tennis program added Javier Bernabe as an assistant coach this year ... Bernabe spent the previous three seasons as an assistant at Northern Illinois and played tennis at NIU ... senior Karyn Emeralda was recognized by the Chicago State Office of International Programs for her work as an international student who had a GPA over 3.50 ... Emeralda and sophomore Marine Perez-Ochoa return to the court after not playing in the fall because of injuries ... the two tied for the team lead last season in singles wins (12), while Perez-Ochoa led the team with 11 doubles victories ... CSU hosted the inaugural Cougar Invitational this fall featuring Bradley, Lewis, Northern Illinois, University of Chicago, South Dakota and UW-Green Bay.

GRAND CANYON
Grand Canyon will embark on its first Division I and WAC season this year ... GCU had several impressive performances this fall ... Janaki Gunuganti advanced to the consolation semifinals of the ITA Championships ... Alexandra Petrzalkova and Priscilla Annoual claimed their respective bracket singles finals of the Balloon Fest in Albuquerque, N.M. ... Petrzalkova and Annoual earned each today Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Month honors this fall ... the ‘Lopes open the dual portion of the schedule on Jan. 31 at New Mexico.

IDAHO
Idaho opened the 2014 portion of its schedule last week, falling 7-0 to Washington State on Friday, before rallying to defeat Montana State 5-2 on Saturday ... Almudena Sanz went 1-1 in both singles and doubles during the week, beating opponents from Montana State while losing against Washington State ... in her No. 1 singles match against WSU’s Elzaveta Luzina, Sanz trailed 5-0 in the first set before storming all the way back to force a tie-break ... she was able to beat MSU’s Iva Parapunova in straight sets at the top singles position ... the Vandal women’ return to action with a pair of matches in Spokane, Wash., against Eastern Washington and Gonzaga on Feb. 1 and 2, respectively.

KANSAS CITY
The Kansas City women’s tennis team begins dual play on Friday and Sunday, hosing Baker and William Jewell, respectively ...  UMKC appeared in the conference tournament championship match last season for the second time ever (Summit League) ... the ‘Roos will have to overcome the loss of three of the four winningest players in school history, and two all-conference performers ... the ‘Roos lost three starters and will have 2-3 newcomers entering the lineup this season.

NEW MEXICO STATE
New Mexico State opens the 2014 dual season on Feb. 2 on the road at Arizona and then play San Francisco on Feb. 3 ... Denise Van Der Ben advanced to the third round of singles play at the 2013 edition of the ITA Mountain Regional tournament, before falling to No. 41 Lucia Batta of UNLV ... junior Susana Alcaraz, sophomore Mia Brandt, and freshman Brittany Collens all won a tournament bracket during fall competition.

SEATTLE U
Seattle University women’s tennis opened the spring season with a doubleheader versus Air Force, falling 7-0 in the first and 4-0 in the second ... during the second dual, Sarah Lucas and Barbara Carey were leading in the second set of their respective No. 3 singles and No. 4 singles matches, but the dual was called as a winner was already decided ... this week, the Redhawks are off ... Seattle U will return to action on a weekend trip to Idaho, facing Idaho State on Jan. 31, Weber State on Feb. 1 and Boise State on Feb. 2.

TEXAS-PAN AMERICAN
The Broncs fell at No. 19 Baylor, 6-1, to open the spring season ... the Broncs earned their only point of the match when Wanda Beguelin defeated Makenzie Craft 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 4 singles position ... Beguelin was named WAC tennis Athlete of the Week for her efforts ... Reegan Greenwood dropped her first set, 2-6, to Abby Stainback in the No. 6 singles spot but bounced back in the second set with a 6-3 win, before falling 1-0 in the tiebreaker ... this week, the Broncs are back in action on Friday, hosting UMBC.

WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN LAS CRUCES
The 2014 WAC Tennis Tournament will be held April 25-27 in Las Cruces, N.M.  The WAC conference championship will be up for grabs, as last year’s champions, San Jose State, has since departed the WAC.

WAC WOMEN'S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Texas-Pan American’s Wanda Beguelin has been named the Western Athletic Conference women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for January 13-19.

Beguelin, a senior from Lyon, France (Lyccee Parc Chabrieres), picked up the lone point for the Broncs, as Texas-Pan American fell to No. 19 Baylor in dual play. Beguelin earned a 7-6, (8-6), 6-4 victory over Makenzie Craft in No. 4 singles. Beguelin, and teammate Reegan Greenwood, had their No. 2 doubles match against Baylor’s Craft and Alex Leatu go unfinished.
